Hi guys,

A few days ago I came to my senses and decided not to buy a Gen 4 but rather put some money needed to buy a Gen 4 into my engine to increase the power and torque output and to use the rest of the money to travel.

I have previously asked if anybody can tell me what the differences between the two engines are. The Gen 4 produces 30kw more than my engine - that is an increase of 20%!!. I am not sure about the torque, but as far as I can remember the torque also increased by a similar amount. Please guys, help and if possible send me the power and torque graphs for both engines. If the increases are at top end of the rpm bracket, than it will be useless as I have found that when touring in Southern Africa my engine seldom goes above 3000rpm. If anybody can help - please.

Attached is a similar file for the Gen 4.

The MIVEC motor has the torque peak at a much lower rev (2750rpm) and then it stays flat for quite a long rev range.

I went form a Gen 3 SWB to a Gen 4 LWB - the weight difference between the two is considerable and results in the Gen 4 having less (noticeable) oomph because of that.

Thanks for the info but I still need specifics - was it heads, cam, fuel, a combination of all? Will it be possible (economical) to put some money into upgrading the old 3.8 to the new 3.8 power and torque levels. I am not a "chip" believer.

To the best of my knowledge is the only difference the variable valve timing (MIVEC).

Instict suggests that the valves(maybe not), cams and ECU will be the major components to change.

Personally, I'll rather put a chip in than fiddle with the valves and cams.

Do what I did, trade your Gen3 3.8V6 on a Gen4 3.8V6 .

I am not a chip believer!! When they fit a chip, they only move the cut-off points higher - closer to detonation, more fuel etc. BUT no increase in basic efficiency of the engine. The only way to do that is by doing the heads (bigger valves, bigger ports, higher compression), bigger valve lift / longer valve duration - it cam changes - and to assist, more fuel. A "alawaai" exhaust is also not an improvement in efficiency.
I have decided (came to my senses) to rather use the money and to do more tours. Southern africa has so many places that we still want to see and rather than spending a lot of money on basically the same vehicle, rather travel.
