Crossmember replacement ?

Hi,
the bashplate mounting points on the crossmember below the gearbox on my PJ are damaged, probably due to taking a hit with previous owner.
Is this part obtainable so I can replace it or should I take my old one to an engeneering shop to get new mounting points welded on ?
Neil.

Neil,
The mounting points can surely be re-machined or re-fiited.
Another option is to drill the hole through the mounting and chassis where the bolts fasten onto the welded nut.
Then buy a high tensile bolt and nut preferably use a lock nut application with heavy duty spring washers and fasten that way. I do not use Nyloc Nut application at all.
Mine was not that serious as it was only the cover plate at bootom of gearbox but is what I did.

Thanks, will have a better look at the damage this weekend and see how I can use your idea,
only noticed it when I had the wheels rotated and balanced the other day, also realized the one protection plate is missing, probably due to the same hit it took.
Should have inspected the underside better but this is my first PJ so I didnt know what was suppose to be there and what not.

Hi Neil,
If you are missing some bash plates:
1. Don't go offroad - especially if the missing plate is the front one and you have a Di-D: that plate protects the turbo intercooler and the intercooler is expensive to replace.
2. Look at some of the aftermarket one-piece plates (stofpad, lynx, ...) - they are stronger than the original and probably cost less.

@andrew,
thx,
the front plate is still there, it's the next one that is missing - I think, dont know if there is suppose to be one, cant find anything in the service manual.
Yes the initial idea was to get a Stofpad plate, so while I was doing the tyre rotate thing I had a look at the mounting points so I will be able to ask some questions on the Stofpad product, it was then that I noticed the damaged points.
