Battery for Pajero
Trying to start the Paj this mrning and the battery died on me..

I had therefor to get a battery ( the primary battery) today. What will be you advice? And where in Pretoria will be the best option?
Re: Battery for Pajero
I've just gone through the same experience. Ended up buying a Raylaite Nano. This battery is technologically advanced for frequent starting and rapid recharge as required for various new cars which have the stop/start feature. I do a lot of short trip and a lot of restarting especially during countryside viewing trips. The battery is about R82 more expensive than the standard Raylite. Battery code is 652EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery). I paid R1182 at Battery Centre.
Must say I now have a very much smoother and quicker startup. Will recommend it. Currently running advertising on DSTV channels.

Thank you very much - this is really helpful

My 2c says that the AGM type of battery is a good choice for us off roaders.

They cost a bit more but seem to have a better design life expentancy, very good starting current(not bad for winching either), and good vibration resistance.

See below for so info on them

Raylite Ultimate Info

I have two of them in the car and have found them to be better than the deep cycle and starting battery that I previuosly had.

quite pricey batteries - have been quoted more than R3000 a battery,,,,

Re: Battery for Pajero
No ways that's a huge price! I cant remeber what I paid exactly but it was nothing like that at all. Way less than R2000. Are you sure they are quoting you on the right thing?

Re: Battery for Pajero
I put in a First National Battery model F652AGM in October 2010 - cost R1924 inc VAT at that time. Its a 70AH 720A (EN). As far as I recall it can deliver a peak current of 900A - so swings the diesel up quite quickly.

That battery is still doing its job well.

2nd Battery is a deep cycle all run frrom a National Luna dual controller.

The problem with the Paj is the battery bay location gets quite hot and the position is such that it does get shaken up a bit - so I think AGM technology does help.

Not sure if I would fork out R3k though.
Re: Battery for Pajero
Hi Guys - also need new battery - my stickers have all fallen off - what Ahrs is the original one ? I assume 70 from posts above?

This thread talks of min 80 Ahrs:

I assume its not all about Ahrs but also about how many amps it can deliver as a peak draw ?

Thanx

Re: Battery for Pajero
Hi Tim,

Apologies for the late reply.

I spoke to one of the specialists at First National Battery (factory) yesterday.

Seems like OEM spec for early Gen3 diesel LWB was only 60Ah - I prefer the 70Ah - but as noted at the end of the day you are looking for available amps at crank.

The spec on the 652AGM is 760A cold cranking.
AGM technology apparently also gives greater deep cycle performance.
The spec on the 652C Sealed Silver Calcium equivalent performance is 400A cold cranking.

Explanation of some battery specification terms here: Automotive Battery Specifications Capacity / Performance Definitions

Hope that helps.

In the meantime my 652AGM just died after 2 1/4 years (will find out tomorrow if its terminal - 'scuse the pun) - maybe too infrequent use, too short trips - will probably invest in a smart charger to look after the resuscitated or replacement battery and hopefully extend life.

So we can add to the two sure things in life:
Death, taxes and (if you own a Pajero) running costs.

Re: Battery for Pajero
Hi All,

An update on the above re my "died" 652AGM.

I left it with Battery Centre Randburg on Thursday late morning. They volunteered that they would NOT do a fast charge on it (for which I was thankful) and that I should contact them Saturday mid-morning.

When I called they told me the slow charge had fully restored the battery to original spec of 750A cold cranking current - i.e. "as new". There is no way that a non-AGM battery would have been able to be returned to that state after being so fully discharged that my tracking device had reported a battery disconnect event.

When I went and collected they put the battery on the tester again and it reported 750A. So for the approx R29 that they charged I have a battery that is as good as new - and I am very relieved.

Now for that smart charger - I am leaning in favour of the OptiMate 6 over the C-Tek MXS7.0. Any opinions / positive/ negative experiences on the two?
