Does anyone have any alternative to the silver rubber strips which separate the fender flares and the bodywork?

These rubber strips are somewhat pricy and two of mine have been left to the four winds as the tape came loose.

I was thinking of just a plain rubber "u" channel, but I'm guessing this will be bad for bodywork should sand and dust get in between the rubber and paintwork?

Cape Town Rubber Company. Take an old piece with and have a look at what is available. They were very helpful when I was there. Still want to go get some silicone waterhoses from them.
