Steering Column Bushing / Bearing

I have some bad oplay on my stearing wheel and apparently this is something that needs to be replaced after a while. Has anybody done this and what did you use to?

The manual on this site does not download completely and from what I have read on other forums you have to completely strip the collumn. Apparently the part in question is not available separate either.

Anyone done this before or have a fix for this?

Johann,

Do yourself a favour - pop in at Autoquip in Durban Road (above where Bloomsbury was until recently) and get them to give you advice - they really know their story on suspensions.

It not a problem with the suspension, ie I do not mean play in the steering. The steering wheel itself can be moved around in it's housing. When you remove the steering wheel the movement on the shaft is not much, but if you move the steering wheel up and down it feels much worse.

I have the same problem on my Gen 2 Pajero (1994 3 litre v6).

It looks like the bearing in the steering column at the steering wheel side has some play on it. As far as I can see it's not possible to remove it.

Will the movement / play damage other parts of the steering column? If not I am happy to live with it for a while.

Else I would like some advice on possible solutions. Can the bearing be replaced or do you replace the steering column?
