Genuine vs alternative parts - which ones can you save on

On the last service I did, I noticed that Freek from Mitspro does not tend to use genuine pars for the oil service (they look like the midas ones). Given his track record I was wondering if there arent some parts where the Midas ones will work fine? How about we start a list?

Air filter - Midas one is 50% cheaper and looks he same (except its not pink).
Oil filter - cheaper at midas, but a critical filter for the engine - maybe not work saving a R100
Fuel / diesel filter - given the Diesel in SA and across the border, not worth saving money here either?

Oil - forget the dealer's oil and use Delo400

Auto Transmission flued - only genuine (the cherry red stuff)

Diff oils - infrequently replaced, and very NB - rather stick to Genuine

Fan or other V belts?

Fuel pumps - from Davidvans experience it seems to be better to stick to genuine parts.

Coolant - only genuine?

Masker,

I'm sure you'll agree with me that any drop in quality on any of your items isn't worth the saving. But if the parts come off the same prod line, but with different packaging, then it is a worthwhile exercise.

Let us hope somebody here has some real specs on the various items.

In the mean time will I stick to the Mitsu parts.

On our last Namibia trip, I mentioned to my passengers that I drive my car with care at all times, then I believe when the chips are down in a really tough situation, that it will come to the party and reward me for my care. I feel the same about service and parts.

By the way, my passengers thought I was freaky to think along those "human" lines about my Pajero :D

Hallo all,
Do my own servicing, buy everything from the skelms at Mitsu, at least the part is right, it fits and you known that it is right.also you can be sure that the pirate parts may be lower quality.(Gud or Fram label but made in Fong Kong land)
