Genuine vs alternative parts - which ones can you save on

On the last service I did, I noticed that Freek from Mitspro does not tend to use genuine pars for the oil service (they look like the midas ones). Given his track record I was wondering if there arent some parts where the Midas ones will work fine? How about we start a list?
Air filter - Midas one is 50% cheaper and looks he same (except its not pink).
Oil filter - cheaper at midas, but a critical filter for the engine - maybe not work saving a R100
Fuel / diesel filter - given the Diesel in SA and across the border, not worth saving money here either?
Oil - forget the dealer's oil and use Delo400
Auto Transmission flued - only genuine (the cherry red stuff)
Diff oils - infrequently replaced, and very NB - rather stick to Genuine
Fan or other V belts?
Fuel pumps - from Davidvans experience it seems to be better to stick to genuine parts.
Coolant - only genuine?
