Front left bad noise

2000 SWB 3litre blister fender - Bad noise coming from front left side (passenger) - sounds like gears or splines jumping (a bit like a bicycle chain slipping) - some vibration back through the gearlever. The noise is definitely front axle - not the transfer case.
2H - no problem no noise. 4H - one or two 'jumping' noises when accelerating in 1st or 2nd (under load) but OK when driving normally in any gear. Nothing noticeable on full lock. 4HLc similar.
Reversing on full lock in 4HLlc - horrendous noises sounds like everything destroying itself!
Jacked up front leftside (3 wheels on the ground) - gearbox in neutral - 2H wheel spins freely - 4H wheel turns less freely - I guess this is acceptable as there is resistance from front and centre diffs - 4HLc cannot turn the front wheel at all. (Jacked up the front right wheel {3 on the ground} with the same response). Strangely this all happens with the vacuum actuated rod thingy not moving and staying in the 2H position (towards the diff) - what does this actuator actually do?
Any suggestions for the noise - it is not just clicking it is bad.
Can anyone recommend someone in the Joburg/Pretoria area who can work on the front axle/diff/CV joints/ bearings reliably? (Not someone who just keeps changing parts until the problem goes away without adjusting shims and not even putting back split pins etc).
Any comments on Gearmax?
Or Mitspro for doing something other than regular service?
Maybe I'm going to need some parts so has anyone had work done by the guys near Parthunt in Kameeldrift?
