Shocks for import spec Gen 2
Hi

I took my car in to have it's wheel balancing and alignment checked last weekend, and when the wheels were off noticed that one of the rear shocks appeared to be leaking and will probably have to be replaced soon.

I have an import spec Gen 2 that's equipped with the 3-mode variable shock absorber (which allows one to adjust the hardness of the shock absorber).

I'm not too clued up on how the system works, and was wondering whether anyone knows whether there are specific shocks that I need to use, or whether the system is compatible with any "normal" shock absorber?

Yes, I have the same problem, need to change the shock absorbers but have postponed buying anything because I am not sure how the 3 position shock setting works.
Can anyone help?

Seems that the system is only compatible with certain shocks. The feedback that I got on another forum is that you can get the shocks through the dealers, but that it is apparently very pricey. I haven't gotten round to find out what the brand and costs are.

You can fit any shock that you want, but will lose the function. I'll probably just see what the cheapest option is and go for that; I've found the system to be more of a novelty that a useful feature.

Hi Jaco did you manage to get shocks? im in the same situation and in desperate need of two front shocks. are the gabriel, monroes any decent? i can get them locally for the equivalent of R1500 the front pair, Is this a good price? I seriously need the front ones as they are shot.

what is the cost of the other brands?

According to my mechanic and some friends we can use the regular shocks on our import pajs. we just have to blank the electric connectors that are suppose to go to the top of the shock.

Yes you can fit the normal shocks but they dont give the same comfort and roadholding as the original adjustables.
Its nice to have the soft city ride ,the variable offroad setting and when set to hard is awesome for towing.
I fitted a full Ironman kit and from the begining had problems .
It now feels like Im driving a landrover.
I still have the original set but to change back is going to be a mission as the coilsprings are longer and they had to do a lot of shimming to get the wheel alignment done. My tyres now run off unevenly and theres always a clunk-clunk at the front as well as an irritating squeak whenever I go over a speedbump.
As with all things Pajero , stick to Original.

I too have the Gen 2 Import SWB, but have fitted Monroe's....will never look back, specially after I had major issues with Gabriel's.
As Im originally from Namibia, my SWB has done some serious offroading, mostly on dunes, dry riverbeds and mountain passes and must say the Monroes have done the job nicely.

Hi dr3am3r

No, I haven't gotten round to it yet - the Pajero is more of a weekend / holiday car, so it hasn't been high on the priority list lately.

I think you will be safe by replacing the shocks with Monroe's or Gabriel's, I haven't really heard any negative feedback about either brand.

At the moment I'm leaning towards getting Monroe's. For interests sake I have asked a friend of mind who's in the motor trade to find out how much an original set of shocks will set me back, will post when I hear back from him.

Received a quote today of R1,650 per shock (excl installation).

Have to order from Jhb, no stock in Cape Town.

Hmmm....
