Flashing 4x4 lights on Gen 2

Hi Fellow Pajero Owners

The 4x4 lights on my Gen 2 (3.0 swb) continue flashing even after i have engaged 2x4. When I engage 4x4, all four lights light up like they should. The problem only occurs when I engage 4x2.

The rear lights stay on like they should in 4x2 but the front lights flash. I have tried removing and refitting the switches at the transfer case to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've had the car at an auto electrician but he also can't seem to solve the problem.

I remember there was some info on this type of problem on the forum a few years ago but cant seem to find it. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Regards
Michael

Hi Michael,

I also have a gen2 and did the same thing. Check the vacuum solenoids. Mine are attached on top of the right front wheel arch. One should have a yellow dot on it and the other a blue dot.

If one of these have failed, the vacuum system will not work and thus the lights will not stop flashing. I tested mine by removing them and hooking it up to the battery and blowing on the one side and checked if air is shut/opened when it gets current.

If you need to replace it you will have to replace them as a pair (unless you can get one from a scrap yard), it was R850 a few years back.

Let me know if you need a picture and I can try email you one.

Good luck :)

Hi Henk

Thank you for the advice. I will have a look this week. I didn't think of the solenoids. This makes sense as the actual switches on the trasfer case seem to be working.

I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again

Michael

Seems to me like the solenoids are bad. The flashos lights means that the 4x4 is off but the lockers are still engaged( thas for your situation) check for the blue zolenoid i think is the one in who turns the system off.. If you need help i have the service manual for your help at no charge.... Just msg me and i can tell you how ti donwload the manual

Can you please tell me how to download it?

Guys does that problem occur on all gen2? mine also has the flashing lights and when i engage 4x4 mode it makes a sort of grinding noise from the front left wheel. So i have not been able to go off road in it, in places where people engage 4x4 i just floor it and she sails thru.

Can we get some pictures for that solenoid? i would love to check mine today as on thursday i have a planned 350km trip.

Edit: Found the solenoids and now need to get an electrician to test them.

Hi All

Thanks Henk for the advice and chaddrack for the offer of the workshop manual.

I took the solenoids off this evening and tested them. The blue one seems to be working as it clicks when I apply 12v. The yellow one on the other hand seems to be faulty as nothing happens when I apply 12v to it. The blue one also gets warm while the yellow doesn't.

I will ask Mitsubishi for a price tomorrow and will also ask Midas if they stock the part.

I will post some photos when I get home.

Regards
Michael

Hi All

Here are the photos. The first one shows the location on the wheel arch close to the air filter in the engine bay. I had already marked and removed the pipes when I took the photo.

The second photo shows the two solenoids one with a blue dot and one with a yellow dot. The third photo shows the faulty solenoid with the yellow dot. Obviously you can't see that its faulty but it doesn't switch when voltage is applied.

I'll let you know about the price of replcaments as soon as I have them.

Regards
Michael

Nice :)

Happy to help!

Mine also still has a problem. When I engage the 4H on tar, after a while it starts to make a grinding type noise. It's not too loud but now I don't engage it on tar.

If you guys find what is wrong, let me know.

Hi Henk

I can't believe my luck!

After phoning the dealers and hearing the price of the solenoids (Over R1000), I decided to take another look at the faulty one. I sprayed a lot of Q20 into it and knocked it a good few times with a hammer. I tried connecting it to the power source and it clicked open and closed. I put it back in the car, attached the pipes and the plugs and its working perfectly.

I'm so relieved! Your advice to look at the solenoids saved me a lot of money as I probably would have bought new switches at the transfer case. That would have involved a lot of work and would not have solved the problem.

Thanks for the great advice.

Regards
Michael
