I remember reading on the forum about a auto box clunking when going from Park in to reverse. I have looked but could not find the link.

Any advise as why it would start doing it now just before we are going on holiday? Murphy is in the neigborhood again

Maybe the handbrake is not working as well anymore and causes your PJ to come to rest against the lock pin of the gearbox when it is in "P", then when you move from "P" to "R" it takes some effort to get the lock pin moved causing it to disengage with a clunk sound, try puting it in "N", apply handbrake and remove foot from brake giving it a change to take up any slag against the handbrake, then select "P". See if it then still clunks when going from "P" to "R" after that.
