Strange Bracket on gearbox

I have a 1997 3500 Pajero and there was a 'tinkling' sound from underneath at about 3000rpm. I have found a broken bracket on the rear of the gearbox it is bolted on with 4 bolts and has what looks like a 2'' diameter solid bar balance weight on the bottom, I haven't a clue what it is for. We took it off weld repaired it and replaced it. Any suggestions as to what it is there for?

Tuning mass, probably to alter some natural frequency of the engine/transmission combination on its rubber mountings so that there is no resonance at idle or something similar.

Thanks Gerrit, thats's what I put it down to as well it serves no other purpose, we weld repaired it put it back and the noise has gone. My son and family have just diven to Durban in her and no problems,
