3.5 V6 Clutch Strange Noise - Replacement?

Hi,
I have a 2000, Gen 3, CK, 3.5 V6, 6G74 Engine(in Zambia etc, it is called the Hippo shape).
Yesterday, after a bit if sand driving, I started to hear a ticking noise from the clutch area under the car.(about 0.5 sec intervals at idle speed). This sound is audible with the clutch in or out, and whilst driving till the general road noise drowns the sound.
The clutch and gears works fine and there is no oil dripping etc. When you switch off the engine the, the sound changes to something like a cable that slaps the inside of the bell housing and then stops.
So, the only thing that makes sense to me, is that there is some cable or sort, that became twisted around the drive shaft on the engine side. (because it stays when the only the engine is rotating, car standing, and not the rest of the drive train is not turning). How / where would this come from? I put my right foot down hard, but there is no slipping of the clutch or clutch burning smell.
Now I fear the worst, that the car needs a new clutch. It has done ~153500km's and has had a clutch repair by the previous ouwner at 109000km's at the agents. (The service record just shows "clutch repair")
I have browsed through the forum and only found Diesel clutch topics.
Has anyone replaced a clutch recently on a V6 that can advise on what is making this sound, or advise on the costs, from the Mitsubishi agents vs replacement with an aftermarket clutch. What non Mitsubishi Clutches are good and can be trusted? what can one expect to pay for the labour?
Your help will be apreciated.
