2wd and 4wd selection question

Hi.
I have perhaps a silly question, but one that is haunting me. I have a 3.5 blister and on the transfer case one can select 2wd or 4wd hi with the short lever. The question is this. inside the transfer what changes when you move the shifter from 2wd to 4wd? only the switches to the controller? or does it actually disengage the front drive shaft? Or does it simply disengage the freewheel hub on the front axle? I know that 4Hi with center locked and unlocked is a mechanical change in the transfer as is obviously 4 hi to 4 low.
The reason I ask is I am building a gearbox controller that would remove the gear lever and replace them with servos (Not RC servos). I have never had my transfer open yet and thought I will try here first before taking it out and checking it myself. Any help would be appreciated.
