Did Tierkloof 4x4 yesterday and twice my traction control disabled itself. Once at a very crucial state and left me in an axle twister and just rocks flying. Waited for it to kick in a gain, reversed a bit and then went forward and out. The second time it disabled just as I exited the obstacle but didn’t get stuck.
It starts with a beeping sounding warning you TC will disable soon, then a long bee stating it is disabled. I think this is to try and save the brakes from burning out or something. Both the Prado and Ranger Rover had no issues with their TC’s disabling. I had the same issues 2 years ago.

Why is this function there and is there a way to disable it?

This is interesting. I have the GLX BK model and with diff locked at the back, my TC turns off automatically. But never in 4HcL... Roelf LeRoux should be along in a minute... He's very on the GLS models...

The "disable function" is there to prevent damage to your brake system due to over heating.

There are a few reasons for the system to over heat, but I think in the end it is in the drivers hands. If you are going to use your Pajero for difficult 4x4 trails, then maybe you should get an air-locker fitted. You also need to understand how best to drive through the obstacles. The Pajero TC prefers a bit of momentum and a steady right foot.

The TC is an aid and can get you through amazing obstacles, but it does have limitations.
