I took my recently acquired Pajero 3.2 LWB Gen 3 to Steves last week for it's 135k km service and asked them to check the car over for me as I need to take it for roadworthy to get it registered on my name.
Around lunch time Jaco from Steves calls me, ask if I'm sitting down. WTFrikkadel!?!?!? i'm worried already!!
Seems I need to replace the:
Clutch and fly wheel
Injectors
Brake pads and discs
Butterlies (ke??) - the Paj keeps on idling for a sec or 2 after I switched it off.
Estimated cost to repair/fix = R35-45k
I must be honest, I lost some of my love for the car. Must I fix and keep or fix and sell? Or sell as is at discounted price, plus be open to prospective buyer?

First of all, cancel the deal and get your money back if you can. The seller should have told you about any faults on the vehicle, if he did not you can (according to the credit act) cancel the del within 3 months.
Second option would be to sell as is. This poor thing sounds like it have been abused and or neglected. Fixing and selling is a bad idea, you will loose money, guaranteed. Rather cut your losses and sell as is, but please be open about the problems so that it can't come back to bite you.
Good luck with this bad situation!

I bought the car privately. Seller made me sign a document stating that I buy the car "voetstoots". I don't want to pay a lawyer R40k upwards to nullify the deal. If I spend that on the car, then (hopefully) the car will be sorted.
But I am moerig!!!
If I can nullify the deal, without paying a fortune, that will be 1st price.
Anyone who can give me pointers?

A lawyer might not be such a bad idea after all. I would spent a few bucks on a consultation just to find out exactly what my rights are. If you don't have good legal grounds, then simply go to plan B. On the other hand, maybe you do have a claim and it can be settled out of court. Just don't go to court, because then everyone will loose except the legal eagles.
Are you sure the seller knew about this? And get a second opinion on the fixes as well.

Are you sure Steves are not fleecing you a bit?
The flywheel is very expensive on the 3.2did R14000 alone for the part! Why do they say it needs replacement? Ussually one cant diagnose this without opening the box and when it is broken it does not work at all, hence you would not have been able to drive there. What is the mileage on the vehicle? My flywheel lasted up to 280000km when it went with a bang. What I am trying to say is that yours might still have some life in it.
Injectors needs to be replaced or serviced every now and again on diesel engines. I would say at least every 150000km. It could be that yours are not in spec anymore and thus needs replacement. Not easy to diagnose unless tested or heavy smoking if they are really stuffed.
Brakes needs replacement every now again as you know.
So far all the items that you mention are wear and tear items and could well not have been known by the seller. Also if they are replaced they are new and thus ready for a long time still. None of the items are inherent fault items so if you decide to replace all there is no reason why you could enjoy the vehicle for many more miles.
I would however get a second quote before I start spending money.

Hi,
I will definately get a few other quotes as CATS suggested. Perhaps try Mitspro ( Freek snr) or Hattingh Motors (Andre) in Centurion. As for discs and brake pads, if thse do indeed need replacing, I would strongly suggest the Powerbrake discs, this makes a huge difference to stopping power.
I am a petrol guy, but have seen that the tips of the injectors can be replaced, perhaps somene can add more ino on that item.
Cheers

"and asked them to check the car over for me as I need to take it for roadworthy"
There are two guys you don't say this to: your mechanic and your doctor. They will find things to replace! You must get more opinions!
We don't know what year your car is, but being a manual it is likely to be a decade old. A 135k run in 10 years doesn't sound "enough". Does the service history "make sense"? Are there long intervals between some services?
Most guys on this forum will agree with me that 135k is way to soon for a Pajero to show signs of needing those "wear items" looked at.
I think you need to have a hard look at the history of that car. Ask Mitsu to have a look at the service history (but that one is most probably pre-motorplan days) and also ask your insurance broker to check on the vin number for you. Then decide if you want to go to war against the seller.

Get your car back from Steve's, take it to Mitspro and have them do a check. If they come back with the same list, then i'd also think about selling. But then I'd think that the loss I'd take could have rather gone into some of the upgrades or maintenance and then i'd have a terrific, super-comfy, tremendously reliable, highly capable and easily loved 4x4 parked in the garage.
Have Mitspro look over it, and advise. Tell us how you fare...
