I have a 2001 3.2 DID SWB and if you first reverse then go forward there is a distinct "klak" noise from the diff/both rear drive shafts. This will only happen if you reverse and then go forward or go forward then reverse.If you go forward all the time or reverse all the time it does not make the klak noise.It seems that there is some play some where in the drive train. I had the prop shaft universals done now and the rubber bushes on the outside rear end of the diff. The vehicle is at gearmax Nelspruit now and the side shafts and diff were checked and everything seems ok. Could it be in the clutch/transfer case housing?

Hallo Joof. I already had the side shafts checked by Gearmax Nelspruit and according to them its not the problem. But will let you know if I find a cure.

Check the side shaft nuts where they go into the wheel hub. These nuts are located behind the round cover in the centre of the wheel hub (outside section) Remove the wheel and then remove the round cover and tighten to the correct spec. I spent R7000.00 to find the cure and it is not even an hours work with no parts needed!!

Remove the side shafts were they enter the wheel hub, clean the shaft and put some copperslip on.

I also had the problem on my 2001 Paj, less than 2 hrs to fix.

I have the same noise at the moment and have been told to replace the drive shaft. They are about 12k a piece at the moment.

1.) What is the best solution without having to pay 24k?

2.) Would it be fine to drive the vehicle like this?

1. See above.
2. I have also heard that swapping the left and right sides can help - but I have no experience of that.
3. Should be safe. Worst that happens is that you disconnect a side shaft and use 4wd via front axle. But I think that is really not likely to happen.

@Andrew: Thanks. But there are many solutions. Need to know which one works best? Or should I do them all at once?

@Jakes: The copper slip solution. For how long did it solve the problem?


Someone also mentioned swapping the left side with the right side. Does this mean swap the shaft from the left wheel with the shaft from the right wheel or does it mean turn the shaft around on the same wheel?

So if it was my paj, based on the above, this is what I would do:
1. Ensure that the diff is filled with the correct oil to the correct level
2. Remove sideshafts
3. With the sideshafts out check how the companion shaft bearings feel and ensure that there are no leaks at the companion shaft seals (because this is a good time to replace the seals if required). Is there still a noise / rough running with the sideshafts removed? If so, delve deeper!
4. Check, clean and copper slip the splines at the outer ends of the sideshafts. By check I mean visual check of the splines for wear.
5. Replace the sideshafts on the opposite sides
6. Ensure that the sideshafts are correctly torqued up per Monty's post
7. Ensure that the diff is filled with the correct oil to the correct level
8. Test drive.

If that does not solve it then head for a reputable and trustworthy transmission fundi or your local indie.

It is only the side shaft torque. See my earlier post about the outer nuts at the wheel. As I said I spent R7000.00 to look for the problem and it was the outer side shaft nuts that was loose.
