2 loud bangs, no gears, heart failure, everything seems fine

Decided to test the new truck's climbing abilitys this past weekend on a lekke steep hill on the in law's farm.
Put the car in neutral, and shifted to 4LLC.
When I started the steep incline I heard 2 loud bangig noises coming from the gear/transfer box and hit the brakes immediately. Tried to pull away again, but the engine just revved up while in Drive. At this point I started throwing up in my mouth a little bit as I just bought this car privately, and could see the money (I dont have) flying out of my pockets for an eye watering expensive repair bill.
Hit Neutral again and slowly freewheeled backwards to the start again.
Started the whole process over again, and up she went with no problems.
I'm still a bit shaken though and want to know if could have caused any damage. Should I have it checked out, and what could have been the cause.
The guy I bought it from said he very seldomly used it in 4x4.
