Twice this week now my 2004 Gen3 Auto does not engage either D or R when reversed out of yard. The initial revesre action does not present any problems, only there after once trying to engage D or R for that matter. Any sugestions of what the cause may be.
Have you checked the ATF level? When last was the ATF changed, is it still in good condition, ie a light pink colour and not smell burnt of have particles present when dipstick cleaned off on a clean white rag?? Did you follow the correct procedure to check ATF level, car in park and standing level with engine warm and idleling? It should be between the two hot marks on dipstick. Is the correct ATF being used? The mitsu autos are very picky on what oil they use, get mitsu branded Dia Queen from stealers, will take 2 tins of 4 liters for a change and 3 tins for a flush. If none of this works you need to do an ATF filter change with ATF flush afterwards, search for 4epikanini's DIY on ATF flush and filter change. If that fails you probably have a sticky valve in the valve cluster or box is on it way out, it will need to be sent to an autobox specialist for diagnosis.
