Hi guys. I am new to this forum, my name is Theo Lyon and I am the proud owner of a '98 3.5 lwb. I purchased this vehicle approx. 5 months ago during which I encountered the above problem. I took the vehicle to a mits workshop where all 5 switches on top of the gearbox were replaced (expensive). Problem then solved.
Last week I travelled on a dirt road with extreme corrugations after which the 4 high lights starting flashing again while in 2 high. I switched to 4 high on the highway travelling less than 100 km per hour. After a while I went back to 2 high and the lights did not flash anymore. On slowing down for a tollgate, a strange noise emanated from under the vehicle and the lights starting flashing again. I immediately went back to 4 high and the noise went away. Could anyone please give advise on where to look for a possible fault? Your help will be much appreciated. Thank you, Theo

Hi Theo,

Welcome to our world.

My first guess would be that your system loses vacuum. The corrugations causing the symptoms make me suspect a vacuum line could be loose or damaged. But I'm sure Marius will be along shortly with the best advice. You should also visit his website for some valuable information on the 4x4 system.

Hi Theo,
It seems I have a similar problem. I have not had any flashing lights issues since replacing my sensors and switches on my Gen3 DID early last year. The other weekend I was travelling to the Cederberg for a weekend away and while straining the car up the Piekenierskloof Pass the 4H lights started flashing. I then also engaged and disengaged 4H and problem went away...until I put the engine under strain again, then 4H starts flashing. I also think it's vacuum related (loss of vacuum maybe), but still need to investigate further. It only seems to happen when i'm straining the engine (3000Rev's+).
Regards
Charl

Hi everyone

I also experienced these flickering 4 x 4 lights on my 2000 3 lt SWB from time to time. Luckily it corrected of its own accord from time to time & once after I fiddled with the freewheel clutch mechanism on the front axle. However, this last time, no such luck. I then decided to check the vacuum pipes to the freewheel clutch, starting at the air intake manifold of the engine. When checking out the two solenoids (on the wheel arch in front of the brake booster) I found the one giving a resistance reading of 40 ohm & the other 161 Kohm. Mitsubishi Paardeneiland kindly let me check out the readings of the set they had in stock, which both gave readings of about 40 ohm. Although expensive (+R900) I replaced the old set with the new solenoids & ,voila, problem with the flickering 4 x 4 lights solved!

I replaced vacuum valves, all gearbox switches and front diff switch.

PS. Also make sure that all switches have their washers fitted.

I once had a similar problem, but the transfer case light started flashing after driving around 30km. We replaced the Actuator, and solinoids. No joy... Ended up being a vacuum pipe that came loose and fell onto the fan belt. It got damaged and after fixing it all the issues was solved.
