Strange noise from front wheels when centre diff is engaged

When the centre diff of my 3.2 Manual is engaged in 4h and 4l and when the front wheels are turned sharply to either left or right I hear a klak-klak noise from the front wheels that dissapears as soon as the wheels are straightend again. The system seems to work fine and the centre diff has no problem to disengage. I purchased the vehicle second hand and am not sure if this is normal.

That most definitely is not normal. I suspect the front axle disconnect device is not engaging properly.

Baie dankie, ek is te bang om vir die agente te vra, as hulle my sien sien hulle geld.

Is it not one of the front CV's, klak-klak sounds like a CV could be on its way out. Does it not happen when in 4H with the center diff open? if it is a front CV it will always do it when in 4 wheel drive and not only with the center diff is locked as indicated in your post.

Hi CATS,
It only happens with centre diff locked, not with open 4x4. It almost sound like a loose plate.

I only use centre difflock in offroad conditions and on gravel roads. The noise can only be heard in tight corners with the wheels turned near to max.

Can only think of CV's then. But then it should probably do the same in any range.

Just a suggestion if everything else fails. I heard of a similar problem, where it was worn riles (is that what they are called?) on the front driveshafts, that were slipping. People were mystified as to why it didn't happen with regular 4H but that still seemed to be the case. Don't know why it would only happen when turning though.

Yip, that's why I suspect the disconnect device is faulty. When the center diff is locked drivetrain wind-up is generated when cornering (even on dirt) and this is probably making the disconnect device slip, either because of worn splines or because it does not engage fully.
