Hi there
Since I fitted Iron man coils, keeping the factory fitted shocks, there has been a clunk every time I go over a speed bump, I have had it checked by the installer and have since had the springs swopped out at another installer, both installers confirmed nothing wrong with the travel on the shocks. Had the shocks checked and no luck
Has anyone else experienced this, has it been resolved?
Thanks
Craig
Hi Craig
You don't say which Generation Pajero you drive, there is a big difference in the rear suspension setup from the Gen 2 to Gen 3. Live rear axle on a gen 2/2.5 versus independent setup on Gen 3/4.
Since you have ruled out shock travel (which would be my first issue to check after a lift) the shock mountings might be suspect. The rubber cups/bushes age/compress a bit and do not expand enough to take up the movement they were designed to absorb. This causes the top shock mounting to have some "play" on it, even a millimetre or two will make a noise, causing it to clunk. Lie under the car and give all the components a good tug/shove to see if you can feel for any play, shock bushes are prime suspects here.
From another post of mine.
" Seeing as I had some time of my hands Sunday I decided to sort out an irritating "klunk" noise on the back of my Pajero. Turns out it was the upper shock/damper mounting that had some play on it causing the sound to travel through the chassis.
I could not tighten the top nut anymore to take up the play on the insulating upper and lower rubbers, so I removed the shock and found a small tubular spacer (31mm long) on the upper shock thread that kept the two big washers a certain distance apart which was stopping me tightening up any further. I simply ground the spacer shorter (26mm) to allow me to tighten up to top shock nut to take up the play in the rubbers which was causing the "klunk"."
If that fails you may have a dud shock or a stabilizer/sway bar link on its way out or a stabilizer bar bush with play on it.

Thanks for the reply, it is a Gen 3, sorry bout that
What you say makes sense, now the question is who can I take the car to to get it sorted out, based in Cape Town, not having the means to do it myself....

You can give Speedy in Paarl a shot. Speak to Hannes. He is a 4x4 enthusiast himself and his guys are sharp. They sorted out all the rattles and clunks on Gen 2's rear suspension for me. Paarl motors are the Mits stealers there and Ryan will order the parts you need at a 10% discount (or so he says).
