Clanking noise at the left rear wheel on my 3.2 DID 2001

I have a clanking/knocking noise from the left rear wheel area. It seems to come from the rear suspension on that wheel. Sometimes it sounds like metal on metal or a loose metal object.
It doesn't go away if you brake so not on the braking system.
It is only on the one wheel as I have tested on a rumble strip on both sides and only the left hand one makes the noise. Can somebody help?

Look at the upper shock mounting rubbers, mine collapsed and had some extra play (5mm) them causing the clunk when going over uneven roads. Also check the anti roll bar link's (two ball joints each) or the two rubber bushes the roll bar runs through on the chassis for play.

Hi Nick

I am currently stripping the complete suspension on that wheel. Thanks for the reply. Some times it sounds like a loose metal part and makes the sound even when I drive on a flat even road but it gets louder on a dirt road. It sounds easy to find but I have been unable to pin point it.

Hi Monty,

A random thought. Do you have air helper springs? Because if you do they normally fit a heat shield on the exhaust where it passes close to the rear left coil. That could generate some noise. My heat shield vibrated right off and is probably somewhere in one of our neighbouring countries.
