Is it clutch or gearbox?

I am battling to select reverse on my 2002 3.5GLS manual. I have had some clutch slip while reversing my caravan, but now I really battle to get it into reverse(hot or cold). Even with vehicle switched off it doesn't want to engage. All other gears are fine.

Where do I start?

If you have already experienced clutch issues ("I have had some clutch slip while reversing my caravan"), then I suggest you should start with the clutch.

The petrol shouldn't have such an expensive unit as the DiD's.

First test:

Pajero on lift.
Somebody operates the clutch pedal, another checks whether clutch arm is actually operating.

PS. Maneuvering the caravan is best done in 4WD, Low range.
(If the surface is loose, of course).

Greetings

If it was the clutch, it would have issues in all gears. It is the transmission. The forward gears have syncro units which speeds up or slows down the gear to be engaged. This is why you have smooth selections in all the forward gears. Now for the reverse gear, It does not have this unit and the teeth are normally bigger than the forward gears. Put the gear lever in the neutral position and take your foot of the clutch. Give it more that 2 sec and try again. Also try to give it a sec or 2 before selecting the gear "after you pushed the clutch pedal.

When last was the oil replaced?

Thank you to all who replied. I have had the box taken out and found the selector fork for reverse to be the problem. There were never previous issues with reverse selection but this time it seems it had it's time.
The clutch actually wasn't that bad, but showed signs of slipping, suggesting that the pressure plate was the problem.
I called Mitspro, who referred me to a person based just on the eastern side of Pretoria. I am so pleased to have found Willie as he did a fantastic job on the vehicle. If anyone is interested is his details please contact me. He will definitely be looking after my baby from now on.
