4x4 gear change not in neutral

Hi
I made the mistake of not shifting to neutral when i changed the 4x4 selector from 2h to 4llc, but i was stationary. When i tried to pull off there was a clank and then no gear was selected. Once i changed to neutral the 4x4 transmission seems to be working fine again with a slight click each time it engages. I wanted to find out if any one could advise me if i am likely to have done some damage which i need to get check out or if it should be OK to carry on as usual (will not forget to shift to neutral again!)
The vehicle is a Gen 3 2004 3.2 DiD.
Thanks

Aardvark,
The beauty of the Pajero system is that you do not have to be in neutral when you shift from 2H to 4H to 4HLoc or back to 2H. (This is an exercise that you should do vwry often to ensure that the pistons are in fact moving and engaging the selected setting. I do it everytime that I drive my Pajero.) In fact you can select and shift up to speeds of 100kph! It is only when you go into or out of 4LLoc that you have to be stationary AND in Neutral (or Park) AND with the steering wheel centralized.

Hi Cloyd, thanks for the response. But it was 4Lloc which i mistaken changed into while not in neutral but while stationary. It dropped all gear selection until i went into neutral and then re-shifted to another gear option. Just wondering if i damaged something in doing this?

No I don't think you would have damaged anything. It happened to me before as well. What you find is high range is disengaged but because of the loaded drivetrain it is unable to engage the low range gears. Kind of a neutral position in the transfer box. If anything serious did go wrong you would have known by now. Clanking noises when low range is engaged is normal. Damage to gear teeth makes a continuous noise.

Aardvark,
I did not read your message properly and missed the 4LLooc part. Sorry. The same thing happened to me. What I do now is when selecting 4LLoc or back to high range, I select reverse and go back a few centimetres then forward for a few centimetres to make sure that the box(es) have in vact engage. Then normal driving.
