Automatic Transmission Fluid

1. Earlier today I went to "my" local Mitsubishi Spares Outlet to buy 10 litres of auto gear oil to do a complete oil change on my Pajero.

2. The salesman gave me a new oil:
"MITSUBISHI MOTORS ATF SP III Automatic Transmission Fluid" and NOT the normal ..QUEEN oil. The part number is MZ320101. There is a notice: "MITSUBISHI MOTORS
GENUINE PARTS" on the container as well as "MITSUBISHI MOTORS CORPORATION".

3. The question is: Should I use this oil or should I insist on ..QUEEN oil??

Interesting.

In March 2013 the Mitsu OEM packaging I got was 4litre cans. Part number 4024610. R243.21 per 4litre excl VAT.

The wording reads: DiaQueen ATF SPIII

Is the part number that you quoted the part number on the invoice or the part number marked on the can?

Maybe just double check with your supplier - but it sounds like they have changed the product name.

It seems that DiaQueen was manufactured by JX Nippon Oil & Energy Corporation - a company formed from Nippon Oil and Mitsubishi Oil in 1999 and initially known as Nippon Mitsubishi Oil Company.

I presume, but cannot confirm so far, that the DiaQueen name came from Mitsubishi Oil (three diamonds of the Mitsu logo).

Andrew,

1. Number on invoice and container plus the three dismond sign.

2. I did ask and said it use to be ...Queen. They confirmed that htis is the new oil. This morning I went to MITSPRO and showed then the can and they said YES it is the new oil from a new manufacturer in the UAE.

3. So in about two weeks time I shall bite the bullet and change to the new gear oil unless somebody tells me not to do it.

Cloyd.

Thanks for following through and letting us know!
Interesting that it is now made in the UAE and not in Japan.

Interesting this because I need to top mine up. So here is a question because I want to make sure. When checking the ATF level, the manual says the level must be between the 2 notches. I presume they mean between the 2 HOT notches ?
Mine was between the COLD and the lower HOT notch. I have read else where that low ATF level could be a factor towards my Traction control lights coming on when under load up steep hill or towing caravan.

IIRC the correct way to check the level after a fluid replacement (and once you know you have sufficient oil in when the ATF is cold) is to:
1. With engine running move the gear lever through the selections - Park, reverse, neutral drive etc. a few times
2. Check the COLD level again that it is sufficient = above the cold mark.
3. Go for a decent drive to get the ATF up to working temperature then stop on level ground in neutral with the engine running and check the level again. The oil level should be at the top hot mark.

ie the hot level mark is with the gearbox operating, not with engine turned off.

Wow, talk about inflation. I went to my Dealer yesterday and got 4L of DIA QUEEN - R422 incl VAT
And then when I rechecked my ATF level, it seems that it is correct so I dont even need the fluid right now.

There is an alternative. After a lot of research I found 2 replacement oils, but only one is available in SA. Dia Queen sells for R 105 / lit or you can buy Fuchs Titan ATF 4400 for R100 / lit. Before you get exited about quality and specs, the Fuchs product has a higher spec than the Mitsu oil. Go to http://www.fuchsoil.co.za and look up the closest outlet. I spoke to one of their technical guys at Western Cape Lubricants in Strand and he was very helpful.
You should also consider changing your transmission filter. Did mine last week as per the instructions posted by 4ePikanini and it was real easy, if you follow his instructions.
According to the service manual the filter must be replaced every 130000 km

Hi bosmanwp,

What was the state of that filter like when you replaced it? I must admit I do not have that item on a scheduled maintenance list!

I have not inspected the filter as it is a closed unit, but the oil was a dark brown colour and there were a few tiny metal particles on one of the magnets. (there are 3 removable magnets in the sump) My vehicle is a 2006 3.2 DiD with168400 km
