My Poor Pajero

Following on from this thread: https://www.pajeroclub.co.za/forum/view ... 891#p37891

The Paj has now been there two full days.

I'm getting stories upon stories as to what the problem is....

To recap:
I brought it in as I believe my Diff is on its way out.
This was then believed to be the props haft. Vehicle was driven by dealers and they recon she's underpowered....
This problem then was blamed on a faulty air flow sensor (making the exhaust resonate)
This was confirmed on a diagnostic test.

OK..... Replacement air flow sensor ordered.

Now, diagnostic test "does not pick up a faulty air flow sensor" (I'm insisting on proof)
Vehicle been driven by various "specialists" over the last two days. Now its the diff again :o
But, they need to strip it to be sure :? :? :? Ouch,,,, Told them to rather tell me what the specs of backlash / play should be and compare them to what mine is.....

So, I think I'm being stuffed around. Big stories about air flow sensor, then the supposed lack of power and now a noisy diff.... I asked about the lack of power and they start stuttering......

I think I need to fetch my car and say thank you very much and go to someone else..... BUT WHO?????

Eish. I know the feeling! Maybe take it to Go Power / Alan Black for a dyno test to first confirm or disprove this power loss story.

There are a general work shop in Florida that sort of specialize in Mitsubishi Pajero. He just love them with him and his family drives Pajero's . If I can't do something on my Pajero myself he is the only person that touch my vehicle. Maybe ask him for a second opinion. Clarendon auto 0116742009

Eish. Not good. Why would a diff fail? Water ingestion? Wrong oil? Manufacturing fault? Surely they must last longer?

Cats, I don't know.

She's done 190000Km. Not a lot for a car like that, if you ask me.... Always had her serviced with Mitsubishi...

No wear to be seen!
Oil looks good!
Backlash within specs!
Above as per dealer.... Bearing are on their way out.

Surely bearing can be replaced and off you go. Where is this bearing? Does a diff have a bearing or is this a sideshaft bearing?

It should have 2 carrier bearings and a pinion bearing

KaiV,

My few cents worth:

A diff cannot cause underperformance - if it does, then it must be so f.cked that it will not make the car move!

For R30 000, I will lend/steal/hi-jack a vehicle and drive to Partshunt to find a second hand diff and install it myself.

The diff has four bearings - two on the input shaft and one per side shaft. If anyone of them or more that one is stuffed it/they will make such a noise that you will hear it. The easiest way of checking each bearing is the put the car on axle stands, start the engine, engage top gear and let it run. Then go below and listen with a stethoscope to each bearing. If you do not have a .'scope, use a long screwdriver. In fact spend a small bit of the R30 000 odd and buy one. Then you can listen to valves, alternator bearings, lifters, water pump, etc and identify any faulty one.
