Gen 2 Transfer Case 4LLC Problems

Good day all ,

New member to the site.

Have been reading through as many threads and posts as I could find in connection with the issue I am having.

Very new semi-owner of old Gen 2 Pajero
Semi-owner because vehicle is still in process of COR and it looks like the money is running out faster than the vehicle is getting on the road.

I cannot say too much ( no names , no pack drill , innocent parties and all that )

Before I purchased I followed instructions here and got the opinons of two independent experts ( full time qualified mechs with their own businesses ) who own / have owned Mitsubishi vehicles.

According to the advice given I purchased the vehicle -- although there were snags as it was a high mileage unit I was assured that these were not too serious. Vehicle had been mainly used in 4H on the hardtop

Of particular concern to me was that the vehicle would not go into 4LLC ( 4x4 low range locked ) All the normal advice was followed -- vehicle stopped , wiggle wheeels , go backwards , go in straight line etc etc ( advisors were driving ) One can shift from 2H to 4H no problem as well as into 4Hlc ( whether this was just the gear levers working OK but no actual change I do not know ? )

At that time I was not clued up on super select being used to the old land cruisers and manual free-wheel hubs. I did not know the center console LED lights and what they indicated. ( left rear light remained lit RED ) no other green lights ! ( or orange ones )

What has now happened is that the vehicle is stripped ( from what I can work out ) centre console , switches , actuators solenoids , in fact everything to do with the "Super-Select" Gearbox has had to be dropped and the trasnfer case split and sent to gear and diff "expert"

( As I mentioned money is running out faster than vehicle getting on the road )

I am somewhat dissapointed at the advice I was given as IF I had known the extent to which work was needed I would have walked away from the deal.

After much reading I am now convinced that the "experts" should have neen able to pick up from the symptoms that the vehicle was exhibiting that this was no "easy-fix"

As I understand ;

In normal mode and everything working 100% there should be TWO green lights on constantly for the two rear wheels in 2H ?

When in 4H there should be four greens for all four wheels ?

When in 4Hlc there should be an orange light for the centre dif lock ?

Pity I never studied this before -- but one tends to rely and trust the "ëxperts" !

Suggestions comments most welcome.

Thanks

You understand correctly now:

As I understand ;

In normal mode and everything working 100% there should be TWO green lights on constantly for the two rear wheels in 2H ?

When in 4H there should be four greens for all four wheels ?

When in 4Hlc there should be an orange light for the centre dif lock ?

It is a shame that this wasn't detected earlier. My gut would be to inspect the actuators first as this is simple to fix. Splitting of the transfer case, I would rather run away!!

Hi guys,

I also bought a 2.8 Diesel SWB Gen 2 and thought that my low range didn't want to engage. My issue, the problem was between my ears.

Two things:
- the lights on the dashboard sometimes doesn't work. That would mean that the 4x4 does engage but doesn't indicate. Rather physically check it to make sure.
- Second, I also thought my low range didn't want to engage. Sounds silly but remember that when you want to go from 4HLc to 4LLc, press the lever down, then left, then up (like the reverse on a Polo).

If it still doesn't engage, look further.

I have a gen2 transfer case for sale.

Read up here on how the system works. The lights should not be believed for a mechanical error. The pajero 4x4 system is very tough and any failures is usually vacuum or electrical switches that can be easily and cheaply fixed.
