Empty brake light housing??

Hi Guys
I am the proud new owner of my first, hopefully not last, Pajero 2001 3.2 DID LWB and I noticed that the big red lights above and below the reverse light does not work, I opened it up and saw that there is no wires nor lights even positioned there? I wonder why? Has anyone here ever made a mod and installed lights there? Since I feel the top light and two on the bumper are not sufficient, I would feel better if those big red lights were also on when I brake!

I tried to find any post on the topic but could not find, please point me in the right direction if anyone has touched on this before :)

Charles

Hi CharlieM,

Welcome to Pajero ownership. I wish you many miles of happy motoring.

The reason the lights are disabled is a legislative thing because the spare wheel is offset on the rear of the vehicle. You will see newer models have the spare wheel mounted centrally and then the lights are not disabled.

Several members have, however, upgraded their rear light clusters, making them operational, although probably technically illegal. I can't imagine that anyone has ever been bust for this mod!

Here are a couple of threads for you. (Note sometimes Google searches work better than the forum search.)

Thanks Andrew and so far so good! Unfortunately discovered a major oil leak today so a bit bleak about that, but it is what it is, cannot wait to get her back to health!

Oh I understand, well thanks for clearing it up for me that does make sense! thanks for the links and the tip, duly noted!

I don't think activating those lights will make it illegal as the original bottom ones are still there. As a matter of fact, during my Gen3 days, did I have a bit of trouble at a check point because the officer was of the opinion that my lights were not working. I never did the "fix", but am convinced it is the right thing to do.

CharlieM,

You can replace your taillights with the later Gen3 taillights. They do fit. It is p.ss easy to modify the later lights so that every light in the cluster works. It gives extra tail lights, extra stoplights, extra indicator lights plus the normal reverse lamps and fog lamp. If you go back in the dark history of the Pajero club you will find photos of my taillights. I moddded these myself and I still have some lights available.

Thanks Mr Roux I also agree and will def. want to do the fix! However right now I am looking into my leak and I suspect that oil pressure sensor from what I can read on the forum I am almost 100% sure that is the source of my leak. When that is fixed I will def. look into the lights and post pics if there is any interest.

@ Cloyd Thanks for that very much indeed I was wondering about replacing with the later models clusters, but have not actually looked into it, thank you that saves me some time. I did have a look not sure if it was your setup I can't recall but def. a major improvement in lighting :D How would the wiring work for that? Did you make a thread on the procedure?
