Hello All
I have a madman 2 fitted to Die Valk, mostly for EGT purposes but it also served as a low battery alarm set at 12V.
lately I have had high voltage alarm trips. my high voltage alarm is set at 14.3V - checking the system I see max value at 15.3V
The alarm only trips during idling and only for about a half a second at a time. but its doing so constantly. trip for half a second, then nothing for 2 or 3 seconds and then trip again etc. its doing this every now and then and only at idling. when I rev the car standing still it goes away and when I drive the charging voltage averages around 13.8V which is what it has always done.
So anything I should worry about? is my alternator packing up? any and all help appreciated as always.
Probably not your alternator. Possibly regulator but I would first check out the batteries as the first culprit.

Maybe try to find someone with an oscilloscope to try to see what is really happening.
Hi Guys,
Some general comment: When I had my dual battery system installed the salesman told me that my alternator was overcharging and that I should have it attended to. Today, eight plus years later, it is still charging and my car and battery are still working.

I think the difference here is that it is an aircraft grade instrument, not a salesman, that is saying that there is something amiss.cloyd wrote:Hi Guys,

Hello all. Thanks for the comments.
So yesterday, after my post, i had an interesting episode. I unlocked the car, as normal, climbed in and when i turned the key the whole car was dead. Tried it a couple of times. Nothing. Fearing my battery is kaput i swear, climb out and as i close the door the lights go back on! Started her up and drove home.
This supports Cats battery as the first check point. All terminals felt nice and tight, but I nevertheless took them off, cleaned everything properly and re-fastened them.
Today no problem yet or any alarms going off. Will keep an eye and have the battery checked out. I see the battery is marked with Nov 2012
2.5 years old. How long should they last?
Thanks

Just longer than the warranty
, which is usually 2 years, so you are about at the right age for replacement.

check the ground straps to chassis and engine. If you can, take them off, give them a light sanding and re-attach.
Andrew,
Being aircraft quality or only a decent quality multi meter, the voltage reading will still be the same.
