Auto transmission jumping

Hi guys, just had my 3.2 did jump out of gear when cresting a hill. I was driving in tip tronic when it happened, basically went from 5th to 2nd, moved it back into D still nothing, and then when we put it back into manual it picked up a gear and everything was fine again. Drove another 300km and everything seems fine. Any ideas as to why or what caused that? Anything to check?

If you are going to slow for the gear when driving in tip tronic it seems to change down for you. I have noticed mine do that at least

Hi Rusti,

Sorry to hear this.

There is a known problem where some pins shear off in the gearbox. Not sure if that could be your problem.

Here is a post related on the Aussie forum: http://www2.pajeroclub.com.au/forum/sho ... hp?t=28833 do the symptoms sound familiar?

Otherwise a first step in these cases is often to drop the autobox sump, check if there are bits of metal on the filter. If there are metal parts on the filter = bad news. Else replace the filter and then replace the autobox fluid with Mitsu DiaQueen III and do a flush.

Hi Andrew thanks for the reply. Forgot to mention that I was towing, but basically no symptoms prior to this happening. Vehicle was driving fine until there was an increase in reving and when I looked at the dash it was indicating second gear. After a few seconds it seems to have found a gear and manual changing and driving in D has seemed fine since. Unfortunately I am on a trip and miles from an agent so not sure what to do at the moment, was hoping it was a simple temporary electrical issue with a selector or something?

Hi Rusti
The auto does downshift when in manual but only at low speeds. Unless if the vehicle struggle with the load uphill I am not sure if it will shift on its own.

The only thing you can do is to look at your AT Oil level using the correct procedure. Making sure the level is fine.

Hi G3, thanks, yes I am aware that it downshifts automatically but I was doing about 100km/h, too fast for a normal down shift and there seemed to be a moment of 'no power' while the 2nd gear light was on until it 'found ' a gear. I often drive in manual but have never experienced this before.
