Troubleshooting 4x4 Super select lights/diff engagecnoise
Hi All
Sometimes when I am cruising at any speed the orange light of the super select 4x4 system suddenly illuminates and then a humming/grinding sound comes from the front diff or gearbox. I then have to reduce speed to almost a stop, it then sounds like the diff or gearbox engages with a hard knock sound. When I drive off after this has happened, the humming sound is gone but the orange super select light still flickers for the rest off the trip. Even if I switch the ignition off and restart the vehicle, the light still remains flickering. The next morning the 4x4 super select lights are back to normal. I drive a 2001 3500 GLS with manual gearbox.

Lets start with the basics first. Are all the tyres the same make and size?

Does this happen when you drive in 2H or 4H? I assume 2H. What happens when you engage 4H

Re: Troubleshooting 4x4 Super select lights/diff engagecnois
I experienced a similar thing with a 2000 Gen 2 which I bought 2nd hand. It had clearly never been offroad and was immaculate / low mileage (except for a slight diff whine) so I was careless about checking it out the 4WD selection properly. Only later did I discover that someone ham-fisted had somehow damaged the transfer selector mechanism. It did not actually select itself (like yours seems to do), but could not select full time 4WD (with open centre diff). The centre diff always locked (i.e.went into 4HLC even when the shift lever was in the 4H position. It would not come out without a lot of coaxing and to and fro reversing / changing direction etc. It seems the previous owner was not aware of this and drove it in "4H" without realising that it was actually in 4HLC while on tar (how I dont know). As a result the transfer box, propshafts and diffs were fighting each other all the time. This caused excessive drivetrain wear despite never being taken offroad. So what I am saying is that it is probably quite easy to fix at this point (transfer box selector linkage probably damaged in some way) but you need to get it seen to or it could become very serious if it selects inadvertently - or refuses to disengage while on a hard surface. My fix involved overhauling both diffs, transfer case and propshafts! Very expensive...

Re: Troubleshooting 4x4 Super select lights/diff engagecnois
Good morning Cats
All my tyres are the same brand and size. Yes it happens when I drive in 2H doesn't matter what speed. When the vehicle is idle ling and I try to engage 4H especially when the vehicle is still cold the four green lights starts flashing, in about 5 seconds they switch off and the orange centre light aluminates and flashes. This happens quit a few times after switching off the vehicle and restarting him again. It seems that this is now happening more often than in the past. At first the orange light aluminates while driving but no strange noises appeared. This morning The morning I tried to engage 4H in my driveway but the four green lights just kept on flashing. I then selected 2H but as soon as I tried to turn it seems that the centre diff lock engaged. I drove forward and reverse about four times only then all where normal again.

Thank you 7Pajeros for your reply as well.

Re: Troubleshooting 4x4 Super select lights/diff engagecnois
My Pajero is 1 2003 SWB petrol and had the same problem. It started with the yellow light which went away on stopping and selecting park. The turned out to become something else. All the gear sensors had to be replaced which was a good part of R 20,000. On receipt of the car after repairs it started making noises and it was found to be the accumalator in the brakes system. Another R 10,000 later and now I am waiting for the next financial shock. I think selling is the only option?

Re: Troubleshooting 4x4 Super select lights/diff engagecnois
Hi all
I have checked all of the vacuum pipes as well as the front accumulator all in perfect order with no leaks. Then we started checking switches on the frontal diff and a friend helped me to check the wires to the gearbox and back. We found some faults but could not determine what exactly is missing.
So I took my Pajero to a workshop that does electrical diagnostics and has a good knowledge on the Pajerö's gearbox.
This morning he showed me the three switches that is located on top of the gearbox. Two is not working at all and one is barely making contact. He ordered these three "VERY" expensive switches this morning. :( .
I will keep you all updated as my bank account is plummeting to a minus.

Hi
My Pajero is finally back from the workshop and the super select has never worked this good. Total cost R5865 money well spent. They replaced three switches on the gearbox.
Thank you all for your replies.
