Radio/sunroof/interior lamps/LCD screen not working

Hi All

Thought I would quickly share a handy tip I learnt the hard way today (in case no-one else has yet).

This morning my sunroof, radio, LCD screen, central locking, traction control all weren't working. I had tried to fit a small LED light panel in the rear roof light compartment and without knowing had shorted the lighting system and blown the fuse.

Turned out to be a small 15W blue fuse held in a yellow protective holder. Changed that and everything works fine again.

So if this happens to you you now know what to do. Remove the protective yellow holder and change that 15W fuse!

Really happy I found it as was getting a bit worried about what the heck had happened to my poor van.

The ink below explains it a bit more technically than I can.

hi
over the last few days the radio reset and lost its stations memory.
then the lcd displayed a message something like 'abnormal voltage, system will shut down.'
now the same items are not working and the central locking.
i have checked all relevant fuses and they are operating ok and have power.

any ideas?

The earth connection? Even if it looks fine. Undo, clean, re-tighten.

cleaned earth by
battery
body
and engine.

i seem to be going bonkers. now no headlights.
i must be doing something wrong. what i did notice previously was that the warning sound does not warn me if i open the door while the headlights are on. does that clue help?

i am going to check the main fuses again. either i missed something or
something has changed in the mean time.

still, any ideas would be welcome.

I assumed you checked ALL fuses? Even ones that seem unrelated to your problem, in both the in-cabin as well as the engine bay fuse holders?

yes. all the fuses wether related or not. cabin and engine bay.
seat heater fuse was fused. replaced.

i cleaned the positive connections by the battery.
(why do people put grease on the battery terminals?)

the lights are back. but still no warning sound when the lights are on and the door is open.

still no
cabin lights
lcd
radio
central locking
sunroof
electric aerial extend/retrac

is there a main fuse that supplies all of the above?
or maybe a relay?
most of these functions are not vital, and i think they could be grouped together under one part that operates/feeds all of them.

by the engine compartment fuse box there is a yellow box with two fuses.
one of them is for the accesories.
fuse is fine.
i sprayed contact cleaner inside and pushed and pulled it in and out a few times. repeated that a few times.
now
the radio comes on but i cannot set stations, just static at this stage and
the cd shuttle cycles.

the rest is still u/s.

i noticed this weekend that the odometer zeros every time i switch the ignition off.

Does it throw any fault codes if you do the DIY dashlight test?
