Hi guys

I am looking at buying a 2001 3.2DiD manual LWB Pajero. It has done 213000km and has full service history with only one owner and in excellent condition. Price R139 900. Is this a good price for such a vehicle? Is the km to high for such a model and how much more can I get out of this motor? Is the auto gearbox better than the manual? Anything specific I need to look at when buying this vehicle?

I have the exact vehicle with slightly less km on at 209 000km. I think the price should be slightly lower, I was offered a lot less on mine when I asked around for trade in some time ago when I had the itch but I am the second owner so this one might be in better nick than mine.

These engines are generally very robust and should give a good couple of km still. I am intending to keep mine for a long time still after I had my last itch. Reports seem to indicate that they should do 300 000km easily. There is one guy on here that has done over 600000km on his with the engine still unopened!

The manual has a dual mass flywheel that needs to be replaced with the clutch. This is a costly animal at around R15000 in total(clutch and flywheel with labour) so check if the clutch and flywheel was done recently. Mine is still on original clutch but I am saving for it, as it is bound to give hassles at this kind of mileage. The manual has a very notchy, agricultural feel to it and is very strong but as they are not brought into SA in manual format since 2004 parts could be costly going into the future. I love my manual and still prefer it when out in the bush, but must say that the auto would have been nice on the pta-jhb traffic. Manuals are also slightly cheaper to buy than autos.

As preventative maintenance I would check injectors and pump and definately have top timing chain guide replaced. I am intending to replace the waterpump on mine in the next few km and also start replacing some water hoses as preventative measures. Other than that I will get in mine right now and go on an extended trip to anywhere without stress.

At my age, I would opt for the automatic, but the manual gearbox (developed from the Canter 3t truck) is just about bullet proof.
My Pajero has the 5spd manual.
1st to second is always 'sticky', especially on a cold gearbox.
The clutch is however as soft as that of a Tazz or Polo.

In the event of the clutch needing an overhaul, you can in fact revert to the solid flywheel as per the 4m40 (2.8 TD). I did that with my conversion.

Hi 4ePajero

Did you have to do and special conversions to fit the 2.8 flywheel and cluch?

Would be interesting to know for future reference

Hi Cats

Which dealer quoted R15k? When I asked Midrand about it they said that's it's about R22k. My father had his one changed a while back and it was also around the R20k mark. R15k is a whole lot better than R22k!
