GTO Motor in my 94 Gen2

Hi All,

I am just letting you all know that I have started a transplant that I think will really make my Gen 1 SWB a menance to be dealt with.

(Moderator note:
For clarity, the heading was changed to Gen 2, since it has been established that the vehicle is in fact a Gen2 Pajero, not a Gen1.
The project would however be valuable to Gen1 owners, since the Gen1 and Gen2 engine bays are just about identical)

I originally started just wanting to swop out my manual gearbox for a Auto, nothing wrong with the Manual but just wanted auto and got a box from a 3500V6 Gen1. However when I started I was approached by another Gen1 LWB base owner here on Gaborone who had purchased a rebuilt GTO V6 24v DOHC motor (165kw, 238nm) and was going to fit it in his car. However he in the end did not have the energy to make it fit (apparently an issue with the throttle body that would interfere with the firewall and the computer re-wiring). So he asked me if I would consider swoping my 3.0V6 Gen1 Motor for the GTO motor so that he could get back on the road ASAP. Well for me it was a no brainer and the deal was done.
Its quite a simple swop, gearbox fits bolton, starter etc all the same. There is a small modification on the engine mountings (Bolt pattern on GTO Block) but easily sorted. On the throttle body problem, we are moving the Gearbox 10mm forward and should solve the problem, if not we are going to modify the intake manifold so that the throttle body sits at the front of the engine bay and block of the old throttle body mount at the back. this entails a little aluminium welding but also not too much of a problem. Follwong that all I will have to do it to mate the existing exhaust to the exh manifolds of the GTO Motor and do the ECU wiring and that should be it.
I am really exited about all this and will post pictures from now on.

Hope all you "adventures' are well and will let you know as progress is achieved.

P.S. Does anyone know of anyone has done this before or am I the 1st.

Regards

Steve

1994 Gen1?

Production of the Gen1 Pajero ended in 1990 (1991 in some countries), so a 1994 will be a Gen2?

Chris Robinson in New Zealand fitted a Rover 4.0 V8 to his Gen1. (I think he subsequently sold it).
There is a Gen1 with a 350cu inch Chevy V8 somewhere in the USA,
and many 4.3 l Chevy V6 Gen1s, especially in the USA.

Tell us more about the V6 engine you are building in.
The output figures (165kw, 238nm), points to a 'performance' engine.
238Nm is not really encouraging.
Do you have torque and kW graphs?

You will have a much faster Gen1, so a brake upgrade (Gen2 callipers) will be a good idea.
So will best quality shocks (eg Bilsteins / Koni / Ironman )

The 3.5V6 was only introduced in the Gen2... methinks you have your Pajero generations a little mixed up...

Hi Guys,

Yes I do have my duck wandering a litlle and as a new pajero owner have been doing some guess work. However now after some carefull investigation have the following to report. I own a 1994 Pajero Gen 2 that came originally with a 3.0V6 that I have now had removed and swopped for my GTO motor which is a DOHC 24V engine The following specs are available at Wikipedia.com.

Mitsubishi 3000GT, 3000GT SL, 3000GT SL Spyder (USA); Mitsubishi GTO; Stealth R/T (USA, Canada) DOHC 24v V6 165 kW (224 PS; 221 hp) at 6000 rpm 277 N·m (204 lb·ft) at 4500 rpm.

Sorry if I had posted incorrect info, think the exitment got me. Any how the project should be complete next week, awaiting the intake manifold that had to be modified to move the throttle body to front of engine.

Will keep all posted.

Will post some pics soon.

Steve

Hi All,

The conversion is about complete and here are a few things that need to be notified for anyone attempting this in the future;

1) putting in the Auto box from the Gen 2 3500 V^ into a manual 3.0 V6 means that you will have to mod the prop shafts as the coupling on the Auto box are different.
2) Engine mounting to use. The 3500V6 mountings bolt on the GTO block and slide in perfectly.
3) Exhaust manifolds to use on the GTO motor - The 3500V6 Exh manifolds bolt onto the GTO heads perfectly and the port sizes are the same. This means you can then bolt you std exhaust onto tehse manifolds without any modification.
4) Intake manifold - This possed the biigest problem. I had to swing the manifold 180 degrees. this meant having to relocate the vacumn nossel on the intake manifold which after rotating was located in the front, back to the rear. This entails having to cut off the protruding piece on the manifold, welding up the hole and the drill and tap at the rear to insert new fitting. Also turning the manifold this meant that the throttle body now faces to the front of the engine bay just above the head on the driver side. with the manifold at std height the throttle body rested on the cam belt. the solution was to have a aliminium spacer (50mm) betwwen the botom piece of the manifold (the piece that bolts to the heads) and the upper section to clear the cam and belt and the water pipe that comes from the rear to the front of the engine that lays along side the intake manifold. this was the most expensive part of the conversion (R3000.00 to have the spacer made and longer studs to secure).
5) the std GTO ECU needs to be wired into the existing harness and this also takes someone who know what they are doing.

Anyway all this is complete except for the wiring which is currently being done. following the completion I intend to test for a while and the have the exhaust changed for something a bit bigger in Diameter, as the std one is only 48mm till the rear silencer, even a bit small I feel for the Std 3,0 V6 that was in there.

I have attached 2 pics, one of the car and one of the motor before fitting. I will take lots of pics once complete and post for all to see. Aslo I will give feedback on the general, performance, fuel economy etc.

Steve - (getting exited now)

Jip.

Import (not SAMCOR assembled).

The diesel versions were 2.5 intercooled TDs.

No, that is a Gen 2; it just has round headlamps. We never got those in SA (officially), but in other markets some were sold with the round headlamps.
