Good evening
So i parked my vehicle at PE airport a week and a half ago. upon my arrival bag last Thursday evening, i started up the vehicle, let it warm up as it had not been driven for a while. i then drove for about 2-3 Km's and there was a knock which felt like the autobox was jumping out of gear, it did it a couple of more times. i stayed the night in PE as a result of this, in the morning it was still doing the same. i took it to gearbox and diff centre in PE, it seems it is jumping between 4th and 5th.
I have not had any issues with the autobox before nor have i felt there was something not right with the box.
What would cause this to happen suddenly like this? i cannot believe it is wear and tear. i have only towed a small boat perhaps 5 times since i have had it.
any inputs welcome
Regards
Mark
One is always tempted to ask about gearbox oil first:
when last was the oil changed? What is the oil condition? What is the oil level?
These symptoms can often be sorted with an oil flush and new filter.

what does the ATF look like? Is the level correct?

Paj Newbie,
In your post you say that you drained and filled with 4 litres of oil. That indicates that you did not drain the cooler as well.. This can be a potential problem. The cooler gets a sludge build-up and in the end does not work as it should.
I suggest that you do a full drain and possibly a rinse as well. Use the "new" oil as part of the rinsing oil. Once the cooler and the rest of the system is "clean", use new oil to refill and in all probability your problem will be solved.

Hello Cloyd
thanks for the feedback
i read on the forum that you should only change 4L of oil when doing a service, i personally did not do the service, but took the vehicle to a dealer to do, i hope that they did drain the cooler, i will have to ask them

Mark,
Sorry for the new bad news. If they only used 4 litres, then they did not do a complete oil swap! The proper job (full replacement of oil) is well within a DIY's capability. You need oil, some basic spanners, a container to catch the old oil and an assistant to start and kill the engine. 4E pajero wrote a long article on how to flush/do a proper oil change.

Hello Cloyd
thanks for the feedback
i got the amount of 4L to use from this Forum.
All members, please, can the Torque converter cause the 4/5th gears to jump or would it be more of a gear issue?

good morning
so it seems I am in for a R19K bill to sort out my gearbox, torque converter recon, new clutches etc etc. I am a little disappointed that 250K is considered high mileage, when my cruiser was on nearly 330K before it got stolen
my Pajero has also done mainly highway driving, I have not done any heavy towing or 4x4.
