Shudder/vibration at speeds 80-85kph and 115-125kph

Hi,

When accelerating, as I approach 80kph, the vehicle starts vibrating, not worryingly, but in a way that one's ears sort of block up. It then quietens down as speed increases and then the vibration starts again at about 120kph (although at this point there's a sort of resonance sometimes, other times just a vibration).

Think it might be the bearings, feel it slightly on the left rear, less on the right rear and no feeling on the front. Wheels balanced, aligned and quite new, although I have Dueler H/T's on front and A/T's on back, swopped front to back and still an issue though.

Just asking for thoughts because don't want to replace the bearings at R4k and still sit with the issue. I'm pretty sure the bearings are part of the issue, but what else could it be?

I drive a 2010 Pajerosport 3.2 DiD by the way.

Appreciate the help.

I have the same and it only happens if you accelerate very slightly

I drive a 2010 Gen 4 auto and had a similar problem about 6 months ago. After many drives from several experts, it was diagnosed as 'torque converter lockup' and a gearbox service solved the problem 100%.

Eish... that's not good news. Mine happens just after the torque converter unlocks

Hmmmm, asked about it and torque converter lockup doesn't seem to be the issue.

Seems like my propshaft is bent ever so slightly. Spent hours under the car today actually looking for the cause of a dull 'thunk' similar to the sound when driving over a loose manhole cover (any thoughts on that one?). No luck with that, but assume bearings and prop contribute to the resonance? Also feels a bit shakey, as if something isn't quite in balance at high speeds 140+kph (just upped the speed to check, not usually in such a hurry).

I'm going to get mitsubishi to check it out, hoping they'll be able to give me a proper diagnosison both the 'thunk' and resonance/vibration.

Wear and tear on your steering can have a similar effect. Mine started when the car reached about 230 000km. I reconditioned the steering box and everything were fine afterwards

Great, steering seems a little out of it. Will see if that sorts it out. Did you do the reconditioning yourself Kokkie? Easy? Or if you had someone do it, what can I expect to pay more or less?

Balancing prop and replacing universal joints didn't really do the trick on the vibration, although it is a little better (UV's were a bit worn, so that had to happen anyway).

The thunk is still there though, had the car in for a service yesterday and asked they check the transfer case and diff oil levels, had to top up 0.5l and 1l on those. Which seems quite a bit. Could this have resulted in wear in my diff causing the thunk? Backlash is apparently fine though.

So, the balance of the prop did do the trick, problem was workmanship, see the photo attached. I was horrified when I saw this. Funny thing was car went in for a service and they didn't even notice  .

Found out the 'thunk' is the diff bushes (am I correct? diff bushes right? And what is the arm called? Control arm?) worn, parts 41399C and B in the image.

Any idea where in Cape Town/Bellville area I can have them replaced at decent price? Mitsubishi charges R500 per bush, then I still need to find a place to replace and and and.

A&M Power Steering did the work. Some parts were only available from the agents. Total cost were between R5000-R6000 but it was done in 2011 so I suppose it will be more expensive today.

So, realise I haven't given an update.

Just to close things off, shudder was due to prop balance. All better now.

Thunk was sorted out by lubricating bushes. Also saw a bit of rust on the base on which the coils rest at the rear. Some lube here and voila, no more irritating thunk.

Recently went on a trip to the Richtersveld (via the Namaqua national park), then to the Kgalagadi (getting there via back roads along the Orange river and stopping at Augrabies). Through some pretty horrible Northern cape corrugated road she was a dream to drive.
