Volume control knob

I am driving a gen 4, 2010 Pajero SWB. On my latest trip through Namibia my radio volume control knob suddenly (without reason), failed to adjust the volume. It still switches the radio on and off, but doesn't adjust the volume any more. It is still turning, but it feels as if something on the inside prevents it from turning smoothly . My steering volume control is still in working condition.
I took it in to electronic specialists, but they are not willing to open it up and work on it (staying in Kimberley
).
According to the agents it is not a part that you can replace. I didn't even ask them for a price an a new unit.
Is there anyone out there who experienced the same problem or can give me advise on what I should do?
