Gen 3 Autobox problems

So this morning I was on my way to a meeting - using the Pajero for its weekly leg stretch - when I suddenly noticed both the "D" and "N" lights flashing simultaneously. It was immediately followed by an loud screeching noise and a vibration throughout the whole car. Pulled over and switched off. Started again, but the moment I move the lever from Park into any gear the loud noise returns and the car goes nowhere!
Had it piggy-backed to Mitspro to remove the gearbox and assess the damage.
Anybody had a similar experience? Think I am in for a high jump here!
It now done 265 000km's - not bad I suppose as a lot of it was hauling a heavy van on bad roads!
What a sad sight!

Ouch. Please keep us updated. I am now on my first auto Pajero, and to be honest they still scare me sometimes.

Going on 6 weeks - Awaiting spares!
Sounds like the torque convertor, but I still have to speak with the gearbox repairer directly to find out what exactly went wrong.
Will keep you posted.

usually expensive auto repairs are mechanical of nature and they give warnings.
I reckon you have an electrical issue where it's trying to engage two clutches at the same time.

Just wondering what the final outcome was?
I had a similar issue this weekend. Went down from Gauteng to KZN to ride the Amashova. On my way down my Gen 3 3.2 SWB slipped out of gear a few times. Got down safely. checked the gearbox oil but it seemed fine (couldn't see a clear oil level line).
As we left Durban yesterday, my AT TEMP light came on. No slippage or hunting though. I added 500ml oil at the 1st opportunity, but the light came on again.
It was clear this happened on the uphills. When coasting down hill or doing easy driving on the flats, the light would stay of.
My 1st plan of action is to do a full gearbox flush and refill.
Any other opinions?

Hi Swannie,
Did you follow the correct procedure for checking gearbox oil level?
What type of oil did you add?

Maybe change the oil filter as well while you are at it! Sounds like you have a oil flow / cooling problem.
Mine was a "sudden death"!

Still towed effortlessly 2 weekend before the failure to Bosfontein. No overheating, hunting or any sign of problems.

Hi Roelf
T think I did. Had the vehicle idling for a few minutes, then moved the gearlevel through all the gears, put it in neutral en check the oil. I checked more than once. the oil was clean but i got the impression of "frothing" on the dipstick rather than a clear line.
As I was travelling on a Sunday, I had no option but to put in standard Engen ATF.
I am delivering the car to Mitssi Tech in Alberton today.
Will post the outcome here.
Thanks for your response.
