Pajero Gen4 Hydraulic Lifters
Good day

My Pajero 3.8V6 petrol has done 199 000kms,did oil change on 195 000(2008 model)

It seems the lifters are giving problems now and after consultation with a mechanic suggest to replace all lifters at once.

Car was fine last night and this morning when i started it this horrible sound comes from the engine.

Now i am asking, did any owner expierence the same ordeal and is it possible when changing the oil the noice will be reduced/gone cause at this difficult stage of life there is no spares shops open :(

Please advise me what to do cause i dont want to cause any damage to the engine that i might regret.

Many thanks

Riaan

I am not a petrol Pajero expert but coming from the oil industry I do recall that the V6 has a preference for a specific grade of engine oil. I suggest you Google and look for answers there. This forum is a bit quiet at the moment. Try the Pajero Club Facebook site or the 4x4 Comunuty Forum.
Re: Pajero Gen4 Hydraulic Lifters
Hello Peterpot,

I think this are your specs for the V6 3.8L

Synthetic Oil
Synthetic Viscosity 5W-30 10W-30
Semi-synthetic Oil
Semi-synthetic Viscosity 5W-30 10W-30
Engine Oil, Volume 4.6 l

It also depends your low temperatures, at starting in the morning.
We use 10W40 synthetic where I live, our climate neven goes below cero Celsius in the winter but when we work with Mitsubishi at the the saltlakes in the south of Bolivia (where winter can became minus 25!), we changes to 5W30 synthetic.I always have bee happy with Castrol oil but if not available I use Shell

Maybe if you try a bit thicker oil, your sound might go away after a small rattle in de morning, but if the lifters are worn out there is no other way than change them.

Happy Easter,
Cannot comment on the oil change and what that may have done.
You do not comment on the replacement oil, if it was the same as used previously!
However noisy lifters on start up are not a major concern provided they quieten down after a few seconds.
If they do, let well alone.
Have had similar problems with previous cars, notable Audi.

Kelly
