Hi Pit

I have family living in Basel and have visited the city and surrounds. Like you, they have the best of both worlds, living in Switzerland and South Africa, magic way to do things.

Well, yes, I do own some bikes - besides travelling to and around SA with my Gen2, that's where my money goes..

A Phelon&Moore Panther M75 (350 ccm) from 1950, a Phelon&Moore Panther M120 (650ccm) from 1959, an AJS 350ccm from 1951.

And depending how far you stretch the definition of vintage - there's a 750ccm Triumph Tiger from 1981 and a KTM 600 GS from 1985 (actually two, I combined them to make up one functioning bike, still in the racing trim of my active time in my twenties).

All bikes have their Swiss "road worthy" certificate and are - relatively - frequently used (in the northern summer that is - in the northern winter I tend to be in Southern Africa).

@Andy,
Actually I'm living in the village of Dornach, in the valley of the Birs, 10 klicks outside Basel. I can see France and Germany from my house on the hill.. And you're absolutely right - both places are wonderful. Just returned from SA on friday and I'm blown away by the lush green scenery that awaited me here.

My family live a little further out of Basel, in Riehen - saw France and walked to Germany from their house (they would not let me through). Just Google-Earthed Dornach - looks beautiful on the edge of the city.

I was last in SA in January. Brought some friends from Afghanistan and Canada with me. Driving down from Joburg to Hoedspruit through the Lydenburg area the Afghanis thought it looked like Germany, the Canadians thought it looked like Ireland. I was thinking - since when does my country look like either :D - I must admit the countryside was greener than I had seen it for decades, really beautiful. In everyone's defence, we were coming from the UAE - dry mountains and desert.

Yes that is true. I am of a slightly younger generation so dont have THAT old bikes but do consider them to be classics, I have a 1981 RD350 LC and the 1983 RD350 YPVS, Busy with restoration. As you can see I prefer the 2-stroke more..

Other then that I also enjoy taking my Gen2(blister) to the bush when i get a chance.
