I thought i should share this for the benefit of those who may experience this problem. I've been fighting a vacuum leak on my Pajero , and even the exhaust people could not identify the source. Through fiddling out of frustration, i found that the bottom of the dipstick where it connects to crankcase was the source of trouble. I replaced the small rubber ring around the dipstick pipe and the issue is now sorted. The engine light had been on for a while because of this. The code we got pointed at one of the oxygen sensors. I got the sensor replaced and it made no difference.

So the dipstick rubber seal should not be ignored.
