Hi Guys,

I posted this on 4x4community as well but thought I might get more response here..

My Pajero recently started whining when going over 60km/h whilst accelerating, but dissapears when I take my foot off the peddle. This happened on the Easter weekend just before Bloemfontein, so I bought some oil in Bloem and had a workshop change it for me. This didn't seem to make much difference though. I changed the oil myself again after the trip, and noticed that it was off colour, not sure if this is normal for a diff, as my front diff's oil was clean when I changed it after 50000km..

I did notice something else under the car though, the drive shaft with the cv going from each side of the diff to the wheel, on the one side seems to be leaking grease at speed, at the joint where it bolts onto the diff. Could this have something to do with the whine? I'm trying to attach a pic of it, so you can see the lines of grease leaking out..

Anyone have any ideas?

I don’t wanna fit a replacement diff if I’m not sure that is the problem

I have the same sound from my 2000 DI-D and this starts from around 80km/h to 120km/h and then gets less. This is only when accelerating or when traveling at a constant speed where the crown and pinion gears are engaged. Under de-acceleration the noise is gone. This normally indicates a worn gear set. The gears are case hardened and after prolonged use or misuse they become damaged and then start to whine. This also sometimes happens due to incorrectly lapped gear sets or incorrect shimming. Sometimes having the backlash reset (correct shimming done) can solve this if the gears are not damaged.

Autocrash on Cape Town has a diff at R6000 when I inquired last month.

Marc, it could be that you have a leaking companion flange. This afflicts a small percentage of Gen 3s and if it goes unnoticed could lead to loss of axle oil and premature final drive wear leading to whining.

Think I have the same problem as you. What km's do you have on your Pajero? Mine only has about 168000km on.. The only difference is my whine comes in at a slightly lower speed. Checked my oil again yesterday and looks pretty clean now.

Don't think I have the companion flange problem, as my diff has never leaked a drop of oil before.

I am planning on towing a boat to Mozambique next weekend and i'm worried about breaking down! I've been told if it is the crown & pinion, the whine might get a bit worse, but is very unlikely to cause breakdown. Don't know if I should take a chance though

I have 197000km on the clock. I bought the Paj at 190000km 3 months ago. If it is the crown and pinion gear, then this will evenyually become a lot louder before giving in. I have towed my caravan on 2 occasions on trips sofar and all is still okay. The sound has not increased. On the technical section, there is a workshop manual and this gives you the spec for the diff with backlash values. I however disagree with the method of testing as you are now taking into account all the different components play tolerances as well. This will hoeever give you an indication of the wear. Sometimes if the wear is not excessive, just adjusting the shims to the correct tolerance can solve the problem. This is from experience gained working at Gearmax. The best way to check the play is to remove the rear cover and check play between the crown and pinion gear set itself and using mechanics blue to check wear pattern on the gear set.

dropped off some stickers for redvers last night and had a short chat.

I advised him that he needs to change all the oils as he doesn't know the history of the vehicle. The oil might be low or old or maybe even contaminated with water.

Hopefully that sorts it out as a diff of that caliber is hard to find and expensive as well.
