Hi Pierre
I recently had an issue with my fuel consumption spiking. It turns out that the pistons in the rear brake calipers were worn and were sticking thus not releasing the brakes properly. My fuel consumption went up to 21-22l/100km (which is about 4.5km/l)on an open road trip from Cape Vidal to Durban. Bit of a long short but should be pretty easy to have this checked.

Cheers
J

Sorry if this post is getting a bit lame and long-winded :)

Forgot to mention one thing that was staring me in the face the whole time and that is the temp gauge: The car runs very cold.
Takes forever for the temp needle to start moving (about 15km this morning with outside temp at 15C) to get to 1/4.

Whenever I drop the speed to a nice and easy level drive it even drops to almost 'cold' start-up status. I've never seen it at 1/2.

I took the thermostat out last week when I replaced the anti-freeze with genuine Mitsubishi stuff and did test it. It was opening but I did not measure the value lift.
I bought a new thermostat today from the Stealers just to be sure in case I need it when getting home.

I know if you remove the thermostat the car will take longer to reach normal temp and be heavier on fuel so once again I'm baffled with this one as the thermostat is still in and does open. Just not sure it opens enough. But that would give me high temps if true.

Maybe the gauge is just faulty? There must be a sensor somewhere I can replace.

The previous Owner did a total rebuild on the engine some 8000km ago with new pistons and all.
It might be that it is still running in and thus heavier??

I bought some Electroclean while in Durban and will spray the air sensor when I get home and maybe even fit the new thermostat I bought.

My thermostat appears to be stuck open permanently. On the drive to work (downhill) I reach its stable operating temp after 30kms. Uphill it's quicker, but still takes way more time than I expected. It also never goes higher than well below halfway. I do notice that the car tends to idle higher for quite some time even after it reaches its "normal temp"

Anyways, bought a new thermostat and installing on Saturday morning. Will report back.

Hi all,

In the post above I mentioned that I removed and tested the thermostat but also that I bought a new one from the Dealers just in case.
Well - when I took it out an hour ago I noticed that the new one was far bigger than the old one. Fearing that they gave me the wrong one and it would not fit I noticed that the old one had a round spacer plate around it to make it fit in the whole.
Must have been a pirate part conversion.
I had no idea that the spacer was not standard until I could compare it wit the new one.
See pics attached.
I have high hopes that this would improve the consumption since the temp afterwards behaved far more normal.

I'll post my findings after the next 2 fills.

Thanks once again for everyone's input.

Hi Daniel,

Does the autobox ever lock up (i.e. stop slipping) in 5th with that size tyre? Slip will cost you in fuel consumption - I think maybe as much as 10-15%. (I do realise you would like to improve by more than that!). Slip is also not great for gearbox longevity.

also got same problem,
lazy guzzling 3.8, with chip , branches ,pipe, k&n, tough dog suspension, steel bumpers.
22l 100km. you can floor it from a standstill, make a cuppa, and wait. no forward surge, it likes to change up in gears quickly, but when you require more oomph, accelerator needs to go through floorboard, then it will decide to kick down and get going. go around a corner normal driving, 2nd is so sluggish and hard acceleration required a bit, to get going again.

Last chance, its going to stealers next week, maybe they can see & fix,

History of vehicle, got 13-14L/100km when I first got it, open road, 15-16 town

First indie (car felt lazy straight away) he said he did all the oils, but i think he did not do the Dia Queen SPIII, so about 2000km on that, had it rechanged by mitspro, felt a bit better.

SAC did the chip , I remember then, that they said they played with the responsiveness. I wonder if this has not got something to do with it?
It never did feel better, (consumption getting heavier)

Scorpion 4x4 (mitsu indie in fourways)- - wanted him to do full service, he suggests gearbox chap in randburg, guess what, this guy put in Delo SP III, told me same specs, but alas had it changed again by maritime motors whilst on trip.

last time had it at Mitspro, to sort out a hectic fuel pressure in tank, and the laziness, Well a month at them, 9k later, nothing, get it back, still the same.
ask them to fix battery clamp, all he did was weld thread part longer and just let it hold to underside of tray, no holes…. his dyno came back 127kw, what ??? excuse, the dyno was tight..!!!

And all this in 20 000km, the vehicle is sitting on 147000km at the moment.
at the end of my tether now.
Love my Paj, cannot see myself in a bakkie based frotuna, however Disc 3 is looking tempting, but threads on their problems a lot longer than Mitsibushi'

Hi

Have you guys looked at the possibility of a faulty oxygen sensor?

just a thought.

Hi Daniel

First bit is your tyres, 265/75/16 Cooper MUDZ. Your speedo reading will be out (One of the Brains will be able to tell you how much) and the rolling resistance on the muds are higher. Check actual distance and speed using your phone GPS on a straight flat road by setting the cruise control to 100.

Try swapping out to standard tyres for a comparison. Lock up kit from 4e would also prevent "slip"

Second bit: Those petrol beast are thirsty! Even if your driving Miss Daisy they chugg a lot of petrol, but oooh all that power on tap!
