Hi All,

Just signed up here as it seems to be the most informed place for the Pajero/Shogun 4m41 engine.

Mine died on my whilst on the motorway the other day. It had for a while a timer position sensor problem. I was waiting for the two sensors (at 12 and 3 o clock) to be replaced, but had only got round to changing one. In any case it made no difference.

Any how this is what happened, driving home the car began to loose power and jerking quite violently. If it was a petrol car it felt like a fuel surge where you suddenly loose all fuel pressure, anyway, I noticed it was producing a lot of white smoke, and just made it off the motorway and the car rolled to a stop and died - the problem started about half a mile before the junction.

Any attempts to start it just caused a momentary rev of the engine and then it would die again. In the end I was towed home.

Fuel level is fine, and if I crack off an injector and I get fuel. My feeling is the timing is out.

I read around some of the forums on this, and it seemed to be pointing to this sensor:

I have removed this sensor and the plunger bit that sits in the middle of it seems ok, but the little sleeve bit that sits at the end of the plunger has about 0.5mm of movement - is this normal? And in any case I don't think it would stop it running?

So any suggestions where to go here? I fear its a write off, as I really dont want to spend £1500 on a new pump...

Hi. First of all I would do a compression check of all the cylinders. It unfortunately sounds very similar to the symptoms others have had with a cracked piston in the 4m41 motor...

I really hope not that is not the case, but I would first rule that out and then continue with other trouble shooting viz the injectors and pump. Keep us in the loop.

Yep can do that, fairly sure it's not compression related as it turns over and sounds normal, but I will of course rule it out.

I would have thought however even if that had happened, there it would still run on the other 3 cyls - just badly?

Have you put it on a Mitsu diagnostic checker?
To me it sounds like it could be a faulty sensor.

Does it help at all if I mention how the pump used to buzz noticeably if the ignition was on but engine not started? Currently I'm thinking its the piston position sensor. If this failed would it result in the engine being unable to run?

Is that buzzing pump not the brake accumulator?

100% down by the pump. The brake system sounds different. I wondered if it may be the throttle control module on the side of the pump perhaps.

Just spoken to a pump repair place. They started quoting silly figures of £2500 + 400 to inspect.

I have however had a thought.

Does anyone know if the 2.8 injection pump would physically fit on the 3.2 engine? I may 'downgrade' the pump to one that is not a pile of junk.

Oh also, I was told that something has probably broken within the pump, and so thats what caused the sudden breakdown.
