Hello Mense,
My first post on the dedicated board. Thanks for going to the trouble, Simon. Good to see people around who know what they're doing again..,

So, on to the question. I replaced the fuel filter on my Colt (4M40) and decided to flush the intercooler while it is off. 4e, I know you advocated the use of petrol for this. Is it OK to leave the temperature switch in, or should I take it out before flushing? I've never seen one and I'm concerned that the solvent (petrol in this case) might damage it.

It would be a good idea to rather remove it, if it just screws in.

Make sure you wash it with plain soap and then rinse with water before re-fitting.
Remove and wash the pipes which you can reach at the same time.
I leave it in the sun for as long as possible to dry out properly.

You don't want petrol in the intercooler when you fit it!

Thanks. Eventually it was pretty easy. It is going to take a bit longer to get rid of the smell of petrol in the garage.
