After reading some posts on the internet about some 3.2DiD engines breaking the timing chain at higher mileages, apparently due to the top chain guide wearing out, I decided to replace mine as well, standing at just under 200 000km. The chain itself was also not horribly expensive at just over R800 so I decided to have that and the top chain guide replaced with this last service as preventative maintenance.
All I can say is WOW!!!

What a difference in sound it has made to my Pajero. The engine is a lot quieter, and I mean A LOT!. The top chain guide seem to be somewhat different in design from the one that was originally fitted to the vehicle so it seem that Mitsubishi did a redesign at some stage. I will post picture later. The top chain guide also showed a lot of wear and I think it was definately in need of replacement. It could well lead to the chain grabbing at some stage and breaking.
So for about R1000 in parts and R1500 in labour at the agents I bought myself some peace of mind and a much more smoother running DiD, for a diesel before Bennie chips in with how silky smooth the V6 petrol is
Definately something to look at if you intend keeping the vehicle and it has some mileage on.
I would also recomend a check of the injectors and diesel pump every 100 000k's or so to make sure that the diesel spray pattern is still in spec.
Another thing to watch out for is the rear sideshafts that move slightly out of the diff and leading to the diff oil leaking out and the diff being stuffed. This is something that happen on every 1 in 7 or so Pajero's in my research. If it happens to you out in the sticks just bang the shaft back into the diff with a suitable mallet and check the oil and re occurance. Back home have the retaining circlip replaced with the uprated version and that should sort it out. I had this sideshaft slip at about 120 000 km on my vehicle if I recall correctly.
