Gen 3 Diff Slip???
Hi Gents,

I'm calling my problem diff slip but I have got no idea what the problem is so please do not let the title lead you in the wrong direction...

When I accelerate from a standstill it feels as if my rear right wheel 'slips'. This only happens when I'm turning either direction, but is more prominent when I turn right. When I accelerate really slowly, you can actually hear and feel a 'tick, tick' noise as it gains and looses power.

Any ideas what can cause this?

Regards,
tonton

Your problem does sound like a diff issue, but there are many questions to be asked:

I see you have a 2002 3.2 DiD.

Is it manual or auto?

Does it have a difflock, or a LSD?

I presume you are driving in RWD mode (2H) when this happens. Does the same happen in 4H mode? Is it same on dirt and on tar?

Hi,

I'm the wrong person to give advice, but if you do drive a manual - maybe just have a look at my post. My initial symptoms (which I ignored) sounds similar to your', although to me mine felt like a slip / shudder when I pulled away slowly.

So, I'm sure someone on the forum will sort you out - but maybe get it to someone to have a look at.

This is my experience https://www.pajeroclub.co.za/forum/view ... =25&t=1784.

Hi Anton

It is the auto DiD with a difflock.

Yes, this happens in 2H. I have not tested the 4H option, but driving to work, I was considering the possible outcomes. In my mind the 4H mode should prevent this. Will test and give feedback as soon as possible.

Thanks for the reply

Skillie,

If it's auto you can probably ignore my post.

Re: Gen 3 Diff Slip???
Hi All

The 'slip' is very much reduced in 4H. If I understand the technology correctly, this makes sense because when my rear wheels start slipping my center viscous diff locks transferring power to my front wheels.

Tonton, the 'slip' happens on both tar and gravel.

This unfortunately brings be no closer to a possible answer as to what the problem might be. Any suggestions or advise?

Skillie,

I am not a boffen on technology, but it seems to me that your problem is in the diff. 4H will take ±half of the problem away, because ±half of the power is distributed to the front.

I think you should take it to a workshop before the workshop has to collect it...

Hopefully I am wrong.

Hi All

How does this sound for an explanation?

Re: Gen 3 Diff Slip???
Hi there!

This happened to me as well! My "slipping" noise came from the left rear and left me very nervous the first time I heard it. I did a bit of driving around to pinpoint under what conditions the sound occurs. It occurred when turning left up an incline on gravel and the left rear started spinning. I took the car to Mitsu Tygervallei and expected the worst! They had it on the ramp in no-time and it turned out my left rear Traction Control sensor had something lodged in it which prevented it from engaging and caused it to slip. They removed whatever it was that got stuck in there and my problem was solved! Cost me nothing as well!

Your problem sounds a lot like mine so might have the same cheap solution!

Hi Niel

I hope you are right....

My question is whether you have a rear diff lock or not. Mine has got the rear diff lock which means if it is the same problem it must be with the ABS?
