I recently went to Botswana with a friend of mine and fell in love with the idea of 4x4 and over landing. At the time I was the proud owner of a crdi getz. Trying to per sway my parents to look at something bigger and “better” I had no success even after having looked at some landys and other swb pajero’s up for sale. Having then gone on my big trip(up to namib caprivi and down through lekubu island in botswana) and arriving back in south Africa both me and my father were in town shopping for new years. He then mentioned that a friend of his owned a pajero that he might want to sell. We then proceeded in the next half hour to have a look at the small 4x4 stored away in farm sore. It then became clear that it hasn’t been used for the past 3years and needs some attension. The car was his daughters and if it was not sold it was on its way to sodwana or knysna for launching boats. My dad that owns a outlander might have wanted it more than I did decided we will take it with no set price. We sold my car and made a pretty fair trade seeing the prices of others pajero’s up for sale. The car then went in for a full vale and we replaced all four disk brakes. Took it in for a full service and whala its done...... looks like a new one. I am now the proud owner of a 98’ SWB 2.8 intercooler turbo with 193k on the odo. I hope that this would be the last car I’d ever sell. And for the next few years it will take Potch by storm

Welcome,
You're at the right place to learn about the vehicle.
We have some "hardebaard" experienced guys here - I learn every day!
Keep the balance between studies, though!

Welcome
I'm the proud owner of a '97 2.8i Pajero SWB! 162000km's. You’ll have so much fun in this little beast! Really goes ANYWHERE! Just remember, it is a diesel and treat it like one!
I agree with the previous comment - a few names will pop up and these guys know their Pajero's from top to bottom, and always prepared to help.
From what I can see in the pic's - she's cute! - Looks Great!
Enjoy!
I'm an old Potchefstroomer myself by the way!
Regards

Hey Clive
I was wondering when switching from 2H to 4h it feels like its losing power and the cutch slipping?? Is this normal or am I doing something wrong…. I was also wondering if the superselect lights on the dach does not seem to make sense sometimes they light up and other times flicker? What does this mean?
And at what rev’s is it best to switch gears

Hey Riaan
Switching from 2H to 4H should not result in a power loss or clutch slipping! You can switch while driving @ speeds not above 100km/h. Have it checked out sooner rather that later! (Hopefully "4epikanini" can comment here)
Flickering of lights - I'll PM you and attach a file "Problems Fix and Troubleshooting Flashing 4x4 lights"
I'll sommer gooi in a pdf file "Workshop manual for 4m40 (2.8 Tdi)
@ what rev’s is it best to switch gears?? This is how I do it, others might differ but this is how I switch gears!
I don't like driving above 3000revs - in 5th is shows 114km/h on the gps (True speed)
Gear change in town anything between 2000 & 3000 revs.
I do engine oil and filter every 5000KM's (This again is how I do it - others might differ - and change at 7000/7500 or ever 10000.) I can afford it so I change @ 5000.
The only time I do more km's before an oil change is during holiday trips like December - I covered 6200 km's but the first thing I did at home, yes you guessed it: I change the engine oil and filter!

if you are experiencing power loss when switching from 2h to 4h then my bet would be different tyre pressures or sizes (front and back).
Or someone may have changed the diff and not put the same ratio in.
Other than that you may have a dry diff that creates drag.
Until it gets diagnosed - DO NOT use it in 4h.
The flashing light fix is well documented.
In short everything on the gen2 is mechanical except when you engage any mode other than 2h there is a switch on the gearbox/transfercase that detects this and sends signal to a vacuum solenoid that sends vacuum to an actuator on the front diff that engages the right front side shaft to the front diff.
There are sensors on the front diff and transfer case to check that all of this happens. If any of the sensors fail or pick something out of the ordinary the lights will flash.
For a more detailed diagnosis do a google search for "4epikanini flashing dash lights" - I have helped on various forums regarding this subject.

This makes my Austin 1100 student car look really stupid.
You are privilaged to have such a nice student car and I hope you use it with care. She isn't a youngster any more and respect is due.
The little bit I know about car's mechanicals was picked up during my student years, where a rust bucket had to be kept going on zero budget. Another privilage you have is with the "hardebaarde" here that have huge amounts of experience and knowledge stored up.
She is a real little beaut and I hope you have years of fun and long lasting memories with her.

Thank you for the help I will try to fix it or take to a specialist. The good thing is all the other gear ratios are working fine and it seems to be only the one….. from my limited knowledge it seems to be a sensor on the diff……
The Austin 1100 is a good car I have a Scooter to save on fuel costs and sorry about the late post it was “JOOL” in potch and we are now done
Dankie hardebaard ooms

thank you for the advice and numerous links I received on the 4hi problem
I just sorted it yesterday it was caused by wrong wiring by the previous owner when they fixed the gearbox few years back, it had wiring brace cut no idea why but I’m told it was to try and make the system function and a broken switch on the gearbox. From this ordeal I have learned that if the super select lights don’t work there is definitely something wrong. I have spoken to other owners that leave a 40rand globe fix were it could be something serious. Rather spend the day and fix it as it is a diagnostic system to show that everything is in working order. In my case repaired disk brakes but still had a slight shutter when breaking . On Tuesday I bleeded the breaks and found that to be a bit old, filler cap seal was installed backwards and one wheel with decreased thread in comparison. Then decided to take it in to a auto electrical shop in Rustenburg were 2 other pajero’s but gen3 stood with the same type of problem on the selector system. I had troubleshooted as much as I could on my own following a guide and found that valves are working but not engaging thus auto electrician. They replaced on bulb one switch on the gearbox (modded gen 3 switch) and re wired the brace correctly. This has improved drive comfort and removed the shutter caused by front left wheel engaging randomly(error from ecu wrong input values). The diff lock works and low range actually feels like a low range. Now I can proudly say its standard, fixed and running great for only 1500rand and a bit of student discount
