Diff Shudder??? (similar to Skillies problem?)
Hi everyone!

About 4months ago I purchased my dream car! A 2006 SWB 3.2DI-D with 132000km on the clock. I love my new paj to bits and it drives like a dream!

Unfortunately, I've had one or two issues since that I would like you guys to help me with....

About a month ago I noticed a clacking/slipping sound from my left wheel when it's spining whilst going up a left-hand incline. This was solved using 4H but I still took it to Mitsu Tygervalley to have it checked out. They removed an obstruction from the traction control censor which stopped it from engaging and caused it to "slip". So, problem solved.

This weekend, however, I went 4x4ing near De Kelders and the sound has returned but now it seems it doesn't matter which rear wheel is spinning. It happens only when the wheels are spinning and 4H doesn't make the "slipping" sound go away. I've also noticed that the traction control light flickers on my dash when this happens.

I've read through most of the posts relating to this and I'm taking my car back to the dealer this week. It would seem that my problem with my traction control (as mentioned earlier) is not the solution. I'm going to ask if I can take a mechanic out and demonstrate my problem. What else do you think I need to ask them(list from other posts on this site)?

Check:

Drive shaft in, to see if it hadn't pulled out a bit
Side shafts
Diff Oil (replace!)
Take off the CV's and open and check them
ABS sensors
Loosen and re-tension the whole suspension setup (suggestion from 4x4Community)

Any help appreciated!

the TC light points to your solution.

TC is a simple system and the components involve the sensors, ABS ring on the cv joints and the ABS module/valvebody.

My guess would be that the abs sensors are faulty or the ring gear is dirty.

I have similar problem. Started after diff oil was changed. Could it be wrong type? What diff oil should I use?

Niel,

I don't think there is anything wrong with your car (not yet, before the dealers start repairing things).

You hear the brakes engaging and disengaging as the traction control takes over. That is why the sound is accompanied by the TC lights flikkering on your dash!

Not a pleasant sound, I must confess.

I SOLVED THE PROBLEM...

After months of going from here to there trying to diagnose it WAS indeed in the end due to the wrong diff oil. PLEASE note that no matte what anybody says "normal" diff oil will not work on the Pajero. Safe yourself a lot of trouble and buy the CORRECT Mitsubishi LSD diff oil from Mitsu - you need about 2 liters @ R150! Do not add any additives.

Skillie did you solve your problem? Beacuse you also did a oil change I suspect the same problem as mine! Put the correct oil!

Llewellynn your 2001 DiD would have exactly the same lockable Torsen rear diff as my 2003 model (if it is SA spec). This diff does not use LSD oil, as it is not a friction plate type LSD. This is confirmed by the workshop manual. I have replaced the diff oils at the intervals prescribed and have used oil of the correct grade (as per the manual), never LSD oil. I have never had issues with the diff making funny noises either.

I believe your issue and sollution to be unrelated to LSD oil. What fluids did you change in order to solve your problem?

We have 2 threads covering the same problem - How about having it combined? Here is my reply
I ONLy replaced the rear diff oil and noises stopped. It was confirmed by dealers in Sandton and Northriding that the Mitsu LSD oil is the ONLY oil they use in all Gen3's.

I am not sure why other people does not have the same problem, but my problem is directly related to changing the oil. The dealers also advised m against use Castrol LSX (which is their version for LSD diff's)

I did not add any friction modifiers.
