Nice pictures, thanks.

As I understand it the Trooper is also a sturdy truck. To be fair the only damage you talk about on the Pajero is a collapsed collapsible steering column. S**t happens as they say. What you are doing isn't exactly a grocery run, that's a two ton vehicle flying 8-)

For some reason I really like the looks of your Pajero, perhaps it's the color scheme...

Not that it will have any practical value for me, we don't have that kind of sand dunes, but wouldn't bigger tires help? Don't the standard size tires dig in? As an Icelander looking at pictures I'd be tempted to go the same route as we go for snow, put 38" tires on and run them at very low pressure.

Re: redbull gives you wings
Just found 2 more pics don't get me wrong im not saying the paj breaks easy just that in this case the column collapsed to easy

Re: redbull gives you wings
I like the patrol a lot and it's a really good vehicle.

but.....a pajero is about compromise and it gives good compromise between strength and safety. In a head on collision you don't want the car to be too strong. It is good to have the car fail at points to absorb impact (except for the cabin).

Re: redbull gives you wings
I think that speaking of collisions, we can safely say that gen 1 and 2 Pajeros are "too strong". There are no crumple zones, it's built on a separate frame and nothing collapses with the exception of the steering column. Just needs one of those stickers you see on Landys, "Beware, you are my crumple zone".

That's pretty much the definition of "no crumple zones". Sure the plastic parts of the bumper collapse as well as the sheet metal in front of the frame, but as soon as the frame hits the wall the car stops hard. Any crumpling/bending of the frame is by chance, not design. Newer monocoque design Pajeros do have crumple zones though, at least the newer designs.

Here is a video of a gen 3, in an offset crash test, couldn't find a full frontal test:

Here is among other things a video of a gen 1 hitting the side of a Honda:

Here is a video of a Volvo demonstrating the crumple zones:

Re: redbull gives you wings
Colin,

Those are great pics! How many of those jumps did you do?

I can't wait to see Achille's (Nino62) clip on my low fly-over at the GTG - seems I'm lucky to walk away with no damage!

I do agree that the steering shouldn't collapse that quickly, but I wonder whether thare was not maybe already a flaw in it before your jump? I guess one can never predict when exactly a thing that is designed to break will actually break, given all the variable conditions that it is exposed to...

I agree with 4ePikaninni, though (about keeping a collapsible steering column).

Regards,

Anton

Re: redbull gives you wings
Hi Anton on this day i did quite a few jumps. Im in the dunes most Fridays if i replace the steering column with a new one im sure the same thing will happen again so what would be the point. From what i can gather it only takes 50Nm of torque to collapse which is not alot. It does say in the manual not to pull or push on the steering wheel too hard or set the steering column down too hard as it might collapse. In the pic the gold coloured metal tab is what breaks off. The last pic shows the oval spacers which i left out so i could crush the tabs to hold the column back in place
